Weather Report March 2019

compared with -3.5C (26F) in March 2018. Avg. Max. Temp: 12.09C (53F) - 2019. 7.79C (46F) - 2018. 10.50C (51F) - Average. Avg. Min. Temp:

total: 1.85"). (2019 112% of average).

Most rainfall on one day: 0.35" on 9th. Wind direction mainly from: North-West 11 days, West 9 days, South-West 4 days and

total: South-East 3 days.

March 2019 was much milder and slightly wetter than long-term average. The

mean (8.48C) was nearly

temperature 1.6C

milder than long-term average and 3.5C above that of last March, while average maximum

temperature was

also 1.6C above long-term and 4.3C better than 2018. This time, there were just six days which failed to record 10C or better, compared to only ten days which actually reached or exceeded that figure last time. Despite the temperature overachievement,

this was

only the mildest March since 2017.

The warmest days were 19.0C on 30th and 18.6C on 29th being the equal warmest and third

warmest day of

year so far. 19.0C was also achieved on February 26th. Besides these days, the second half generally

consistently mild days. The overall

temperature of +1.5C on 4th and 25th was the most temperate for the month on entire

record and only the

second March to avoid an air frost, since at least 1968 when record commenced, the other being 2017.

The 2.07” total saw

rainfall noted on fifteen of the first seventeen days, four of which classed as “wetter”

(0.20” or more).

The wettest, 9th (0.35”), 5th (0.33”) and 12th (0.32”). The influence of the “Jet Stream” was almost total during this period as successive fronts and depressions crossed the Atlantic.

High pressure built following what turned out to be the last recordable rainfall of the month (17th), thereafter we had fifteen totally dry days which ended on April 2nd. So, in common with February, (no recordable rainfall for 19 days (February 11th to March 1st), the month ended with the area in drought conditions.

Overall the winter in fact period

has been somewhat drier than average,

2018 to the end of this month has recorded 6.97”

December (around

85% of long term average), only just over half recorded during similar period this time last year (13.20”). The only certainty about

Spring weather in the British Isles is that you can expect any conditions. Although we have avoided the heavy rain and even snowfall experienced by areas further north and west of us during the early days of

April, temperatures have

been below average and we have also suffered two slight overnight air frosts.

No snowfall was noted during the whole month of March 2019. A contrast

to

March 2018 which saw major snow events at the beginning of that month and did provide snow cover of 12cms on the mornings of the 1st and 3rd and 9cms on the morning of the 2nd.

Beccles Big Channel Swim

BECCLES Association

is teaming

Twinning up

with Beccles Lido to swim the

will be split Lido’s project

to refurbish, upgrade and re- line the main pool; and the Twinning Association who are enabling social, cultural and

educational exchanges

of all kinds for the people of Beccles and her twin town of Petit-Couronne. Several young people from Petit-Couronne are coming over to take part in the swim and make it a true cross channel event.

This will be a big ‘group’

effort for the town, and the organisers would love to hear from anyone or any organisation who would like to take part by June 1st, so

that they can create a team who together will complete the total distance. A timetable will then be prepared and the whole combined distance should be completed in just over 2 hours. Swimmers of all ages and abilities are welcome to apply, but should be able to swim at least 8 lengths of the Beccles pool (244m). The organisers are hoping to hear from people who would like to swim longer distances too and all will be asked for approximate swimming

time when they

apply. There will be no charge for members of the swimming team on the day and everyone who is part of the successful team will be awarded a specially prepared certificate to commemorate

their

participation in what is hoped will be a unique achievement for the town, as well as a fun event for all.

If you would like to make a donation or to sponsor the team then please donate at: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/

Please remember that your garden is also home to a great many other creatures. If you are so inclined, put out bird feeders to encourage winged visitors.

Now is the time they are nesting so it won’t be long before they have many hungry mouths to feed, you will be doing them a great service by

simply topping up your bird feeder and in return you get to watch many beautiful different species in your garden. I reckon to having around 10 different regular visitors to my little patch of wilderness. Look out for bee friendly plants and try to get a few scattered around your flower beds. It is well documented that bee numbers are in decline so any

help we can offer is invaluable. Perhaps, like me, you enjoy cooking freshly picked fruit and veg. Well, the shear variety of what you can grow in your own garden is staggering.
