Beginners Harmonica Workshop - Learn to play in a day!

Beccles & Bungay Harriers Athletics Club

MARCH has been another busy month for the Club with runners ramping up their training ready for their upcoming Spring Marathons.

As a club we HARMONICA player and

teacher Paul Gillings will guide you through the rudiments of playing the humble mouth organ. In one day Paul will take you from being a complete novice to being able to play tunes, scales and chords. You will need a 10 hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C (Harmonicas will be available to purchase on the

day). The

workshop will take you through all you need to know from how to hold the harmonica, to breathing, basic chords, tone, airflow and then onto an introduction to the blues, scales and improvisation. At all stages the emphasis is on actually playing the harmonica and every technique has an accompanying tune and backing track to demonstrate the tuition. Paul Gillings is a former World Harmonica Champion in the Blues/Rock and Jazz/Melodic categories and has been playing music since 1988. Paul toured from a young age with the all- harmonica band ‘Random Sound’ with whom he appeared on over 40 TV shows in 52 countries

including 'The Mickey Mouse Club TV Show' in the USA and 'Jools Holland's Happening' and Glastonbury Festival. More recently Paul performs and records his own brand of harmonica driven Indie/Folk and plays live with a number of bands as well as teaching and playing at international Harmonica festivals. The Workshops will take place at The Cut Arts Centre in Halesworth on Saturday 18th May and also at The Seagull Theatre, Lowestoft on Saturday 15th June and costs just £30 per person. For this unique chance to learn to play book your place now!

raised awareness and got a lot of us out in the fresh air with others when maybe they wouldn’t have done otherwise – a great advocate for mental wellbeing. One hardy Harrier is still going strong by ‘running every day’ and is now over 100 days running and getting stronger and quicker because of it! One amazing story from one amazing athlete in our club this month: Beccles & Bungay Harrier Karl Olley began his epic challenge of running “10 Marathons in 10 Days” raising money and awareness for Operation Smile (Charity Registration No. 1091316). For all too many in countless developing countries, children and adults with an un-repaired cleft condition live with unimaginable

emotional

and physical suffering, yet surgery can take as few as 45 minutes to complete. Since 1982 Operation Smile have provided over 240,000 free surgeries to those born with a cleft lip or cleft palate and each year they treat over 16,000 people. With more than three decades of expertise,

Operation Smile

creates solutions that deliver free surgery to people where it’s needed most.

IT’S your time to delve into history as Rising Stars begin their search for the cast of their next fully-staged production. ‘The Evacuees’ tells the story of the mass evacuation of children from towns and cities at the start of the Second World War and has been scheduled to coincide with the 80th Anniversary of real-life events.

Rising Stars is looking for enthusiastic singers and actors between 8 and 19 years of age to perform in this fully- costumed musical. To launch the search, Rising Stars are holding an Information Evening at 7pm on Friday 26th April in the Blyburgate Hall in Beccles. The evening will give all prospective cast members the opportunity to find out more about the show, meet the production team and get more details about how to

audition to be in the cast or for a principal role. ‘The Evacuees’ is the next fully-staged show in a long line of successful musical productions by Rising Stars, whose previous credits have included ‘Romeo & Juliet - A Rock Musical’, ‘Joseph & the

Amazing

Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and ‘Les Misérables’. The show will form part of wider commemorations in the local area to remember the events of 1939 and is not to be missed.

APRIL 2019

Karl says, “When you hear/ read all the stories about the difficulties families go through dealing with cleft palates you really start to understand how brave these people are. If I can help in any way possible to end somebody’s suffering it’s definitely 100% worth it. Operation

Smile do such

brilliant work, who wouldn’t want to be playing a small part in changing someone’s life for the better. I have achieved this feat with the help and support of my family and friends, along with the fantastic folks at the Beccles & Bungay Harriers who are always giving me great advice and encouragement. I am also delighted to have had the expertise of Performance

4 Sport working with me, making sure I was fully prepared for the event.

training has been relentless to get into the position to complete the 10 marathons but it has all been absolutely worth it to see one more smile!

Karl has been training for this challenge for the past 9 months with his weekly training sessions at the club, his long solo runs, strength sessions and with help from Performance 4 Sport and Seasons Health Club. He has ran the Bungay Marathon route for 9 consecutive days, and finished with the official Bungay Marathon on Sunday 14th April as part of the Bungay Festival of Running. Karl has received support in many ways from his admiring family, many fellow Harriers, and also members of other local clubs including Bungay Black

Dogs and Beccles

Tri Club, he has had a large following providing support by cycling and running with him, providing supplies, advice and heaps of moral support, in particular Bungay Black Dogs have opened their running club up as a base every day for Karl and his supporters and provided him with drinks, food and hot coffee at the end of every run. We are all in awe of what he has achieved, all whilst being a busy husband and father to his wife and three young children and being manager to his football team Beccles Town U10 Bees.

Day after

day he has put his mind and body through immense strain, all to raise as much money as possible for a charity that he is so very passionate about, if you admire what Karl has done and would like to donate to this special cause, please donate what you can: https:// www.justgiving.com/fundrai sing/10marathons10days30s miles.

Beccles & Bungay Harriers hold twice weekly training sessions for

adults and

juniors, at the same time and the same venue meaning that the whole family can come along and run! The first session is free and just £1.50 per week thereafter. Sessions are adaptable for all abilities, from beginners to competitive runners, we have many coaches and run leaders able to accommodate everybody – come along and try us out!
