10TIMES Letting their imagination run wild

A CHILDREN’S author and illustrator

taught

Hennock Primary School pupils how to create a book on World Book Day.

Chloe Woodbridge as Paddington Bear.

The children, who were dressed for the day as their favourite book characters, created designs with Sam Boughton, a children’s author and illustrator based in Exeter. She taught them about the process of writing and illustration techniques that she uses in her book, ‘The Extraordinary Gardener’, which inspired the pupils to create a collaborative piece of artwork. The design included each child’s imaginary plant grown from a seed as well as birds, butterflies and minibeasts. Mylo McDonald, age 10 and chairman of the school council, said: ‘It was such a fun thing to do. I learnt that it doesn’t have to be perfect first time and you can use other things such as collage to make your work come to life. Writing and pictures evolve as you practice.’ Teacher Miss Pooler added: ‘Having Sam in was such a fantastic opportunity for the children to see how a book is developed from a tiny idea to a published piece. ‘Plus, the artwork the children made was exceptional and we are proud to have it hanging in our school.’

PUPILS at Wolborough C of E Nursery and Primary School dressed up for World Book Day and visited W H Smith to pick up their free books.

Emily Rani as Gangsta Granny.

A spokesman for the school said: ‘We had a theme for dressing up for each class, ranging from fairytales, Julia Donaldson and Roald Dahl characters, to magical characters and villains.

‘The staff also joined in with

Milly La Trobe as The White Rabbit.

dressing up. Some of our children visited W H Smith in Newton Abbot and were given bags of goodies and had a backstage tour of the shop, as well as choosing their free World Book Day books.’
