Drunkwoman hit officer sent to help her after row

A LENHAM woman flew into a drunken rage and hurled a bottle at a police officer, a court heard. PC JamesRyder hadbeen sent to

help her when she had reported her husbandmissing after the cou- ple had a Valentine’sDay row. JulietWaghorn (52) reported her

husband missing just before 8pm on February 14, when he walked out after they rowed. Waghorn immediately started

drinking and called police about her missing partner, but became abusive to officers when they ar- rived at her address to help her. Prosecuting, Debbie Jones said:

“MrsWaghorn had contacted po- lice that evening after her husband went missing. When they arrived, she was drunk and started being verbally abusive to the officers. “She grabbed PC James Ryder’s

left arm and was warned if she touched him again she would be arrested. When police told her that her husband had been located, she

threwa bottle of fluid at the officer and began hitting his thigh multi- ple timeswith the handcuffs.” Maidstone Magistrates Court

heardWaghornhadno recollection of the incident, despite officers recording it on body cameras. In a statement,Mr Ryderwrote:

“Mrs Waghorn was intoxicated when officers arrived. I was as- saulted by her from start to end, she had no remorse and was con-

descending aboutmy age.” Defending, Geoffrey Playford

told the court Waghorn and her husband had a “minor” dispute and he left the house. MrPlayfordsaid: “MrsWaghorn

had a few glasses of wine and be- came more anxious, as she could not get her husband on the phone. “MrsWaghorn blames her high

emotional state for her behaviour that evening and is devastated. I think the officer assaulted was moreupset at the treatment hewas given rather than the event itself.” The court heardWaghorn, who

now lives in Leeds village, was “anxious” because her husband had a history of self-harming. Waghorn, a part-time secretary,

pleaded guilty to the assault of an emergency officer.Chairman of the bench, Harry Teacher,
