THE White Horse Hotel in Leiston can trace its history back to at least the 1770's when it was purpose built as a coaching inn to serve the turnpike road that it sits upon.

During its early years it served as a base for the Excise officials who sought to control the ever increasing smuggling trade


that brought overseas


goods such as Geneva Gin from the beach at Sizewell into the county. The most notorious and prolific group were the Sizewell Gap Gang, who became the target of a certain Excise officer by the name of Ingalls. The first landlady of the


White Horse, Mrs Gildersleeves was said to be in cahoots with the smugglers and would often imbibe the officials with drink or hide the contraband herself. The Hotel has changed little over the years and contains


many unique and period features.


Under new ownership of


Toby & Maria Clayton, the hotel is undergoing an extensive and tasteful renovation. The bedrooms are being refurbished to a high standard, the ‘Smugglers’ bar has already been re-decorated with a lighter, more modern style. The bar now offers a large selection of draught lagers and bitters as well as local real ales, a growing choice of gins & rums and collection of contemporary wines in addition to some more well know varieties. Our bar is family and dog friendly and as well as showing live sporting events is also host to live music nights such as the ‘Live night Fortnight’ every other Saturday and the ‘Open Mic Night’ every Wednesday night.

Upcoming plans consist of the total re design of the garden to include a Boules Piste and a large children’s play area making it the perfect venue for families as the weather improves. This will be complimented by refreshing the patio and outside seating areas which would include an outside BBQ as well as a wood fired pizza oven.


One of the biggest changes


has been the dining room, now named the 'Ingalls Room', that features a relaxed and rustic look, with bare brick walls, novel lighting features and a large log burner situated in the remodelled fireplace that was previously hidden behind wood panelling.

Under the charge of new manager Adam Ali, he and his team have brought a cosy, stylish and British focused food


offering to the historical town of Leiston. Open for breakfast every day, and serving food from 11am until 9pm with the exception of Tuesday & Sunday, the menu offers traditional British fare such as local, gluten free sausages, mashed potato and onion gravy, to a hand cut 10oz sirloin steak with mushroom, tomato and Adam’s famous hand cut, triple cooked chips. Sundays offer a minimum of


three roasted meats as well as a vegetarian nut roast, plus a good selection of starters, fish & vegetarian main courses and homemade desserts all served between 12pm & 4pm. Booking for the restaurant is essential although food is served throughout the bar and snug areas.
