The Mandela Rhodes Foundation and Oxford University Press South Africa

Partners For A Better Future

Oxford University Press South Africa is committed to the growth of South Africa and its people through the provision of excellent educational materials and support.

As testament to this commitment, Oxford University Press and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation celebrated the formation of an innovative shareholding partner- ship with a ceremonial signing at Mandela House on 2 September 2008, pledging to promote leadership and scholarship in Africa that will benefit present and future generations.

In essence, just over a quarter of the dividends distributed by Oxford each year will now contribute to Mandela Rhodes Scholarships. This has seen almost 85 scholars benefiting from financial and educational support over the last ten years. In the long term, the partnership will build a permanent endowment to ensure that the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships continue into perpetuity, ensuring Mr Mandela’s leadership legacy.

The Foundation aims to provide scholars with the tools to be leaders in South Africa and across the African continent through its various leadership development and training programmes, mirroring the example that Mr Mandela has set for the nation.

To achieve this vision, the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships Programme offers full scholarships to Scholars-elect, who are registered at suitable universities within South Africa. In addition to the administration of these Scholarships, the Foundation helps students develop their leadership potential by adding the following components to their chosen studies:

• Assigning a mentor to each Mandela Rhodes Scholar

• Providing structured leadership development retreats for Scholars as a group

• Focusing on reconciliation and entrepreneurship to assist students to become agents of change in their communities

The Scholarships aim to give expression to the legacy of academic excellence, leadership, education, recon- ciliation and entrepreneurship. Oxford is proud to contribute to this legacy, building upon our long tra- dition of bringing excellence in education, scholarship and research to people in Southern Africa and around the world. Additionally, we are proud to be able to contribute towards transformation and empower- ment in South Africa.
