Education watch
The Berkshire grammar schools are extremely well regarded. Places are offered to pupils who ‘pass’ the 11+.
The Berkshire CEM 11+ tests the child’s proficiency at a range of verbal reasoning, numeracy (maths) and non-verbal reasoning topics.
The administration of the CEM 11+ is unusual. The two CEM 11+ test papers, which candidates write on the same day in September, are divided into several stand-alone Sections and each Section is individually timed. Timing is a challenge for many students.
The tests are administered using CEM’s pre-recorded audio instructions which are broadcast in the exam room using speakers. The audio states all of the instructions for the tests, including telling students when they should move forward to the next Section in the question booklet.
The tests are multiple-choice and the candidate is instructed to record all of their answers on a separate multiple-choice answer sheet which is marked electronically using a special scanner known as an Optical Mark Reader (OMR). The OMR will detect your child’s pencil marks on the answer sheet and the software will then award your child a mark for each question he or she has answered correctly.
The importance of ‘multiple-choice answer sheet technique’ should not be underestimated. We often find that, when a student is under additional pressure, mistakes are made filling in the answer sheet and the candidate can sometimes lose several marks even though he or she is able to work out the correct answer to the questions. Practice filling in multiple- choice answer sheets in preparation for the 11+, ideally in a similar environment to the real 11+ tests, is therefore beneficial.
Susan Daughtrey Education’s CEM-style 11+ mock exams have been designed to replicate, as far as possible, your child’s most likely experience on the day of the real CEM 11+ tests. This includes the type and standard of difficulty of the questions, the timing of the individual Sections, the layout of the test papers and the administration, where we broadcast our own pre-recorded test instructions through speakers. This experience has been created with the benefit of feedback from hundreds of past CEM 11+ candidates.
To cater to the Buckinghamshire 11+ tests, which are provided by GL Assessment, we also offer 5 “GL-style” Sessions for Buckinghamshire 11+ candidates. These are available at our Slough and Buckinghamshire venues. If you live in catchment for Bucks grammar schools and your child will appear for the Bucks 11+, it is advised to attend some of the GL-style Sessions as the format, content and administration of the tests is different to the CEM 11+ tests used in Berkshire.
Following an SDE 11+ Mock Exam Session your child’s multiple-choice answer sheet is marked electronically and you will receive detailed feedback, including a Letter to Parents, Record Table and (anonymised) List of Scores. Armed with this information you can finalise your child’s 11+ preparation and send him/her into the real 11+ ready to do his/her very best.
