Cricket club’s recovery bid
MAIDSTONE’S top cricket club, TheMote, is working on a quick recovery after a shock when its top three Saturday league teams were relegated last season. This has already resulted in the
selection of three new captains, a newcoach, a talented overseas all- rounder, and a player recruitment drive. The club has a proud Kent
League record, with several cham- pionships. Recently, the 1st XI twice fell just short of regaining premier division status, but last season stalled seriously, with rele- gation toDivision 2. “The target now is an immedi-
ate promotion back to Division One,” said chairman and opening bowlerGlenAukett. New first team captain is top
order batsman James Marriott, who returns aftermissing last sea- son with a knee injury and will look to addto the 5,000 runs he has scored for the club. Other new captains are all-
rounderLewisBone (2nds) andre- tired 1st teamer James Hodgson (3rds). Leading all-rounderMattWhite
has committed himself again to the club and batsman Chris Back will return aftermissing last season. Newoverseasplayer is successful
left-armspinner andmiddle-order batsmanMatt Luksich (22). He is a premier league player in
KwaZulu, Natal, and a coach. Sen- ior club coachwill be former player David Joseph who has been work- ingwithKentCountyCricketClub, heading the juniors. He will work with the 1st XI on
Saturdays but have an overall view of the playing side to ensure it reaches full potential. Thiskickedoffwithwinternets at

Pattenden Lane at about 5pmon February 19. At 5.30pm, a spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "One fire engine remains on the scene of a barn fire inMarden. The crewis expected to remain at the in- cident for approximately four hours, monitoring the fire while it burns out under controlled conditions.” One fire engine remained at the scene until around 7.10pm. The straw and the barn in which it was stored went up in flames. A spokesman for Kent Police said: “Initial enquiries are being made
into the circumstance surrounding the incident.” A resident living nearby said: “Itwas good that no one got hurt. Straw
is in short supply in these parts because of theweather in the past year or so, and that will be a big loss as well.”
