Guidelines for the carriage of DVB in containers
Industry guidelines for the carriage of divinylbenzene (DVB) in containers have been jointly published by the Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS), the International Group of P&I Clubs and the TT Club. DVB is a chemical that is prone to polymerisation (a
form of self-reaction), and, when shipped in bulk, DVB polymerisation can cause heat and flammable gas to be generated. The stowage of containers carrying DVB onboard vessels can therefore present a risk of explosion and fire if they are not properly presented for carriage. In response to a series of polymerisation incidents
arising from the carriage of DVB by sea in 2018, the International Maritime Organization approved changes to the way that polymerising substances, such as DVB, are carried – by means of amendments to the IMDG Code. These changes are contained in amendment 39- 18 of the IMDG Code, which will be mandatory from 1 January 2020, but may be applied on a voluntary basis from 1 January 2019.

New Networking Group Launched
During National Apprenticeship Week, 4-8 March, BIFA will be launching a new Networking group, the BIFA Young Forwarders Network (YFN), to support those in the early stages of their career or who are new to the industry. Carl Hobbis, BIFA’s Training
Development Manager, said: “The idea of the YFN is to create several regional networking groups, run by young forwarders designed to help early talent and young BIFA Members develop their knowledge and professional skills, but in a more social environment. “Initially, we will start with
regional groups at London Heathrow, the North West, the Midlands, Anglia and the South East – with more regions to follow. The events will give YFN members the opportunity to network with their peers and learn from industry professionals, at the same time boosting their continuous professional development. “Each networking group has a chair and vice-chair. We will create

through many of the UK’s top scenery hotspots, from the picturesque lanes of Cornwall up to the stunning hills and glens of the Scottish Highlands. What is more, the funds raised from the event will help transform lives by improving commercial driving standards and ensuring better access to healthcare in sub- Saharan Africa.

a local organising committee that will be governed by at least two regional employers as well as a BIFA representative. “All apprentices completing the
International Freight Forwarding standard will automatically be invited to join and encouraged to attend events that will count towards their 20% off-the-job learning. “Membership is free and comes
with a whole raft of benefits.” Hobbis added: “The YFN has
been created to help promote the industry better, make it more attractive to a young person and to provide forums for them to learn and a voice back to the industry. So far, every employer I have asked to get involved has been very supportive and extremely positive about the concept. The more that get involved, the better.” For more information or if you

Bearman, head of fundraising at Transaid, LEJOG promises to be an unforgettable experience. “This is a truly iconic ride for any bike-it bucketlist and we will be following the same 972 mile route taken by thousands of riders every year. Plus, we are offering opportunities for both single riders and teams to get involved, enabling groups of friends and colleagues to share in both the pedalling and fundraising.” To find out more, go to:
