Spring will soon be upon us and the early shows are already taking place. Every year brings more and more opportunities for horses and ponies of every breed. Whether you own a traditional gypsy cob or a Fell or Dales, there have been some exciting new opportunities being announced for the season ahead.

New opportunities at individual qualifiers for HOYS 2019

Some exciting new developments have been given the go ahead for Horse of the Year Show 2019 and to the format to some of the preceding qualifiers. All eyes will be on the Mountain and Moorland large breed qualifiers throughout the season as we see an increase in the amount of individual qualifying opportunities for the Fell, Dales, New Forest and Highland ponies, by opening out one of the combined classes to now be individual breed qualifiers. This will allow the opportunity for each of these breeds to see a higher minimum number represented at the final. Not only that, but at Horse of the Year Show itself, we are thrilled to announce that in the NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds sponsored finals, the Fell and the Dales classes will each have an individual final as opposed to the previous joint Fell/Dales class. This is a triumphant step forward. Those looking to find a HOYS qualifier near them should visit https:// hoys.co.uk/competitor- zone/showing-qualifiers/

Horse of the Year Show takes place this year from 2nd – 6th October 2019 at the Resorts World Arena, the NEC Birmingham.

Traditional gypsy cobs to have SEIB Search for a Star HOYS Championship

SEIB Insurance Brokers are delighted to announce a brand- new addition to the Search for a Star competition, a new class for traditional gypsy cobs that will also culminate in a Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) championship. At each of the five SEIB qualifiers, one solid and one piebald or skewbald animal will go through to HOYS, so a total of 10 traditional gypsy cobs will have their time to shine at the UK’s premier show.

SEIB’s Marketing Manager, Nicolina MacKenzie said: “This brand new competition will support the SEIB Search for a Star ethos of providing opportunities for grassroots riders with their beloved horses and ponies. We need to say a big thank you to Horse of the Year Show for their continued support of the series and for giving true amateur riders a shot at the big time. Nearly 20 years ago, HOYS allowed SEIB to take ex- racehorses there for the first time and look what a success that class has become! We hope and believe that traditional gypsy cobs will prove to be as popular.”

The Traditional Gypsy Cob Association (TGCA) is wholeheartedly supporting the new SEIB Search for a Star competition. Founding TGCA Director, Andrea Betteridge said: “I am thrilled that the Traditional Gypsy Cob Breed will be showcased within the

exceptional SEIB Search for a Star series with its finals at the most prestigious show of the year.”

The new SEIB Search for a Star competition for traditional gypsy cobs is open to pure- bred registered cobs only. Horses and ponies will have to have a Traditional Gypsy Cob Association (TGCA) passport or have theirs over stamped by the organisation, to prove that they meet the breed standard and are not part-breds. However, as always with SEIB Search for a Star, no competitor has to be a member of any organisation.

The first qualifier of the season takes place at Osbaldeston Riding Centre on the 14th April.

CHAPS (UK) Coloured Show Horse or Pony of the year

“We are looking forward to sponsoring this inaugural award and recognising coloured horses and ponies from the showing world. We are always pleased to see coloured success in the show ring,” said Caroline Hamilton, CHAPS (UK) Chairman.

Open to all horses and ponies that compete in flat ridden, including lead rein/first ridden, working hunter and in-hand classes. A coloured horse or pony is defined as one whose coat colour is piebald or skewbald (white and any other colour). There must be a patch of naturally occurring white coat on the body above the level of the stifle or elbow, excluding face markings. Any white marking below this does not qualify.

Winners will be announced at our awards ceremony on 19th October at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham.
