HOW lasers work – the light fantastic. Dr Stephen ashworth, a Senior Lecturer UEa, delivered an extremely informative presentation on the subject of lasers and how they work. He incorporated a series of practical demonstrations throughout his talk and managed to explain this somewhat complex subject in terms we could all understand. “Laser” is an acronym for


light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. a laser is created when the electrons in atoms in special glasses, crystals, or gases absorb energy from an electrical current or another laser and become “excited.” The excited electrons move from a lower- energy orbit to a higher-energy orbit around the atom’s nucleus. When they return to their normal or “ground” state, the electrons emit photons (particles of light). Lasers are now used in optical


disk drives, laser printers, barcode scanners, Dna sequencing instruments,

Students fly the flag for Beccles Free School at European Champions Cup rugby


On Saturday 19th January students from Beccles Free School were invited to be flag wavers at the European Champions Cup game between Saracens and glasgow Warriors at allianz Park in London. Before the game 15 students


FiSHER Folk & acoustic meets monthly, usually the last Wednesday, in the atmospheric Fisher Theatre Cellar and gives local musicians and singers the chance of a 20 minute performance slot in front of a receptive audience. The band Sark closed the session with a line up of sax, guitar, rhythm box, keys and vocals covering some recent songs such as “valerie” and “Blame it on me”. Entry to this is £5. “i found the trip very exciting, even though it was freezing.


Waving the flag for Saracens was really fun. We had to practice doing it before the game, with rolling the flag up and to hold the straps. The game was very eventful, everyone was roaring with excitement. The glasgow Warriors played great, the Saracens won with flying colours.” The trip was part of an effort


at Beccles Free School to promote participation in a wide range of sports including rugby. Providing these excellent opportunities give students positive experiences in being involved in sporting activities. David Lees, Head teacher

Beccles Red Hatters


BECCLES Red Hatters raised over £1000 for East anglian air ambulance this was through their Table Top Sales and in house raffles for 2018. The group will be celebrating


their 10th anniversary in april and was formed for ladies 50 plus who “wish to grow old disgracefully”. They are easily recognised by their red hats and colourful red and purple clothes.
