colder and somewhat drier than normal for the month. it turned out to be a month of


two distinct halves. generally the first sixteen days were


relatively mild, although there were three chilly days during the first week. This period also saw four of the five days to exceed 10C. Whereas the latter part of the month were dominated by chilly days and often frosty nights, with all but one of the month’s twelve air frosts noted. The exception to this pattern being the 25th and 26th when a warm sector briefly prevailed between cold air from the north atlantic. Rainfall - 1st to 16th average

Temp 4.9C, average Min. Temp -1.4C, Rainfall 1.13”. The overall result saw a one


degree Celsius deficit against the long term average, but only the coldest January since 2017. Compared with January 2018 when only one air frost was noted and mean temperature some 1.7C higher than this one. However, the severe weather of late Winter/early Spring of 2018 is still fresh enough in our memories to suggest there is no certainty as to how the next few weeks will shape up. after all February is nearly always one of the colder months of the year. Despite much influence from the north atlantic during


the month, this was the driest January since 2006. The first half was exceptionally dry, four day periods with no actual rainfall were noted 4th to 7th and 12th to 15th and small amounts on other days were major contributors to less than quarter of an inch noted up to 16th. activity did increase during the second half with the result that three “wetter” days were noted, 0.24” on 21st, 0.25” on 29th and most notably 0.45” on 27th, the wettest January day since 2016. Scarcity of snow has been a common theme during recent Januarys, this month although not prolific saw snow on three days (17th, 27th and 29th), which was the equal “snowiest” for a month since 2013. Consequently, snow lying on ground at morning observation has also been infrequent during recent years but was observed on 18th in form of “light dusting” but to a depth of less than an inch on the mornings of 30th and 31st. Only three Januarys have endured more than three snow days since the year 1999, nine in 2013, eight in 2010 and eight in 2003.


Local Donations for Local Good Causes


WHY was the WCgF formed? Every year charitable organisations apply to national funding streams such as, sport England, sport Suffolk, the national lottery, the health lottery, the local council and as statistics show only 1 out of 10 are successful in receiving funds, the other 9 must repeat the process and continue doing so but are not guaranteed success. Every £1 you donate, only


15p goes to these causes, the remaining 85p pays for corporate big bonuses, their investors, their work force, their big offices, and let’s not forget all the gift aid they claim back, 25%, (25p in every pound) which is claimed every month, generating millions extra. Speaking to local charity


organisations and the people they serve throughout the 23 wards that make up Waveney county, we learned that every one of our local charities and good causes struggle to secure funding every month. With the ever-increasing running costs, charities are forced to either increase their fees, or reduce their work force, and in some cases cancel their services How is the WCgF different?


Roys donate £15,053 to EACH nook appeal


The Waveney Charities giving Foundation is a charities platform set up to receive donations every month from residents and local businesses who believe in local donations for local good causes. The WCgF

ED Roy, managing director of Roys (Wroxham) Ltd was delighted to present Sophie Mayes, norfolk corporate fun- draiser for East anglia’s Chil- dren’s Hospices with a cheque for £15,053 raised from the sale of 5p carrier bags throughout 2018. This £15,053 brings the grand total raised for the nook appeal, Roys’ chosen charity of the year, to £27,377.87. This mon- ey will be used to help continue the construction of the nook, a new children’s hospice for norfolk situated in a five-acre woodland site in Framingham Earl, five miles south of nor- wich. The nook will transform children’s palliative care for norfolk, helping EaCH meet the increased demand for their services.

We know the money is going to a very worthwhile cause and we wish EaCH all the best in find- ing the remaining £1.5million to complete the hospice”, Ed Roy commented. EaCH with its sister company Highway garden and Leisure having chosen them as its char- ity of the year. The nook is being constructed very close to the store and the staff are all keen to support the charity when and where they can. This year each Roys store has chosen a charity of the year, this means that more charities will benefit from the 5p carrier bag sales rather than just one. along with EaCH these chari- ties are as follows, BEaT (eat- ing disorders), SERv (norfolk blood bikes), aSD Helping Hands, Muscular Dystrophy UK, East anglian air ambu- lance, SESaW (Suffolk and Essex small animal welfare), Big C, Leukaemia UK and nel- son’s Journey.

Every month the WCgF on receiving applications from organisations within the county, will be sourced and applied to their importance, how much funding they need, plus how much funding is available. Once a decision has been made, the WCgF Chief Operations Manager, will visit each applicant to determine the 2nd stage process. Who can join? Businesses


that are based in Waveney, whose employees are residents within Waveney are invited/ contacted and asked if they wish to donate and join the WCgF. Employees who are tax payers, and reside in the UK (Waveney), and donate regularly to registered charities can claim on their annual tax, thus reducing their annual tax bill.


Residents within Waveney


(23 wards) are asked to support/ donate/join the WCgF, and regularly donate £4 a month, by doing so we can help them claim (if they are a UK tax payer) on their annual personal tax bill. Every person who registers with the WCgF, and


donates £4 a month, we can give them the means to claim back or offset their personal tax. Each member must fill out and return a membership form, which is kept at the WCgF head office. This information is used to apply for gift aid, HMRC application, stipulates that records of donors must accompany gift aid applications (names, addresses) etc. all personal information will nOT be shared with other funders/organisations, and we guarantee your personal information will be secured under the data protection act 2018.
