We hope that 2019 is off to a great start for you! In this issue, we take an in-depth look at two businesses who should be familiar to our readers, and we’ll see a remarkable project recently completed in Canada on a very challenging site. We also explore the importance of succession planning and talent development in our WRE Advisor. Succession planning? Yes. If you own or manage a business


and “succession planning” didn’t grab your attention, please check this out – and the fewer employees you have, the more critical this may be.


In our WRE Advisor, Michele Markey from SkillPath, a professional learning and


development provider, makes the case for a long-term succession plan for any size business. It’s easy to see leadership as a natural talent or something we can learn on the job, but there is a set of skills that a manager needs to learn and practice – including critical thinking and embracing change – that are essential to lead a substantial operation. Even with great planning, a 50th anniversary is a big milestone for any business. In the last half of 2018, Alps Wire Rope turned 50, and we asked Brad Benner, President, to reflect on his company’s legacy, and what’s in store for the future. He shared some company history, but particularly emphasized the principles that the company has held constant over time, and the sharp eye they have kept on the future. Our industry has changed a lot over 50 years, and it clearly pays to be aware of what’s coming next and adapting. We also check in with Dynamic Load Monitoring (DLM), a UK based provider of load cells and load-monitoring equipment. Martin Halford, Managing Director, tells us about the skilled staff and new products that are driving DLM’s business today. And we showcase a stunning project in British Columbia and highlight the companies who contributed to its success. In addition to Wire Rope Exchange member Northern Strands, we learn about Axis Mountain Technical, who specializes in doing challenging jobs in hard-to-access mountain environments. For our part, we are making plans to attend a number of industry conferences and exhibitions this year, and we hope to see many of you in the course of these events.
