ALPS WIRE ROPE CORP. REFLECTS ON SUCCESS AND LOOKS TO THE FUTURE

BY: JORDAN WEBER

Fifty years ago, the Chicago Cubs were gearing up for what would be one of the most notorious seasons in baseball history. Tat same year, in the nearby Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village, a different type of team was gearing up and laying the foundation of what would become one of the nation’s leading wire rope distributors.

Founded in late 1968 as All-Purpose Ropes, Alps Wire Rope Corporation (Alps) has, through the years, developed a well- deserved reputation for outstanding quality and continuous innovation. Today, the company reflects on the key lessons of its long history, and looks ahead to the future. “Alps started as the U.S. distribution arm for Tokyo Ropes,

out of Japan,” explained Brad Benner, President—reflecting on the anniversary. “Te Chicago location was chosen due to its central location, strong manufacturing basis, and beneficial logistics options.” From this solid distribution hub in the Midwest, Alps set off to expand its business throughout the rest of the country by offering American companies access to top-tier international products. “Te original marketing plan was to make in-roads into the U.S. market by selling high-quality products at market- competitive pricing,” added Benner.

Alps sought out the wire rope product lines best suited for a wide range of purposes, which helped them build key relationships throughout multiple industries. “It allows us to be involved in the many markets we participate in,” he continued—citing the company’s role as a major supplier in the crane and elevator markets, as well as its important ties to everything from lifting and rigging to oilfield and industrial distribution. By mirroring the pricing strategies of domestic manufacturers, Alps was able to offer unique, innovative products produced in Asia and Europe, without driving up costs. Additionally, they focused on building long-term relationships and endeavored to become their partners’ go-to vendor. It wasn’t long before Alps was able to establish themselves as an essential part of their clients’ supplier network. To that end, many partners today rely on Alps to manage their entire inventory—which makes perfect sense to
