UFV consolidates two centres

Food and Agriculture Institute will explore tricky issues by RONDA PAYNE

CHILLIWACK – A new institute at the University of the Fraser Valley will bring together researchers working in the fields of agriculture and land use. The new Food and

Agriculture Institute combines the Centre for Food and Farmland Innovation and the Agriculture Centre of Excellence. “The instructional components [of ACE and CFFI] have always been separate,” explains Lenore Newman, who will oversee the institute. “[The institute is now] sort of a one-stop shop for agricultural and land use research.”

Newman says the institute

will focus on a few key areas, including land use policies, exploration of new crops and managing the BioPods at John Volken Academy in Surrey. The BioPods are an existing project the institute is taking on in addition to a CFFI field-to-table project and a crop innovation project funded by the Real Estate Foundation of BC. REFBC funding will be used to identify viable crops for production on small parcels, given the number of small acreages within the Agricultural Land Reserve. Newman says the projects and partnerships allow the institute to try crops like okra and sweet potatoes that farmers might not risk. Another project is a policy

study around cellular agriculture (using cell cultures to grow agricultural products) and bio- engineering. “Creating milk products without cows. What would that look like in the BC context?” asks Newman. Her team will look at the policy side of these types of food- creation technologies. “I think we need to be

aware of the technologies and get ahead of them before they appear,” she says, noting a number of

companies in California are looking at the issue and are close to releasing these technologies. She says the policy study is one of the first of its kind. There is also a project

looking at how agriculture has evolved to resemble industries such as manufacturing. “When we look at

greenhouse growing, it kind of stretches the definition of what we call agriculture. And it changes the land. We want to look at that,” she says. “What is the future of farming? Are we going to see more production inside as climate change gets worse? How do we evolve to fit an evolving agriculture sector?”
