It is intriguing to note the obvious difference. We can see the implication of what is meant in the distinctive meaning of the difference. To read the Holy Writings literally is to accept what you read, hook-line-and-sinker, so to speak. Whereas, to read the Bible literately is to do it with an open mind, and with a broad perspective.

This is not to mention the fact that the main thread of the narratives contained therein were carried out by word-of-mouth (oral tradition) between the years 30-49 A.D. When the written segments are included, the time line extends up to 95 A.D., a total of 46 years.

Most probably, the Epistle of James was written contemporaneously with Galatians. The first four books in the New Testament – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - were written much later than some of the Epistles.

The last book in the Bible, the Revelation was written in 95 A.D. from the Island of Patmos, John the Apostle being the author. Patmos, by the way, is located in the Aegean Sea. It was used during the Roman Empire eras as confinement of their prisoners, John being one of them. He was exiled there. He was from the large city of Ephesus, originally. I write this tidbit because I am told that the month of January is Bible-Reading Month.

But the story of the Old Presidencia is emblematic, more or less, of how Dumaguete deals with its heritage. For all our self- declared trappings of being a city of the arts and culture, of being a university town, we still lack the wherewithal to make sure our heritage is preserved.

And we are surely losing it, as surely as we had almost lost the Old Presidencia to neglect and lack of information.

Most of us don’t know what “yielding” means. It’s the opposite of the way many of us operate, which is by attempting to control outcomes and situations and to make things happen. In contrast, yielding occurs when we release our need to control things, and instead choose to place a higher level of trust and faith in the process of life.
