Farewell to Ted Edgar 1933-2018

Former top showjumper Ted Edgar passed away peacefully on 30 December at the age of 85; he leaves behind his wife Liz and daughter Marie.

Ted was born into a farming

family and he started his career in the show ring before moving on to jumping ponies.

He won the leading showjumper of the year with the chestnut mare Jane Summers in 1958 and was well known for his partnership with American ex-rodeo horse Uncle Max, as well as the Everest sponsored horses Snaffles, Jetlag, Jumbo, M’Lord and Grandpa.

Ted also won the leading showjumper of the year title at Horse of the Year Show and the King George V Cup at the Royal International in the same year (1969). He also amazingly took on the 1963 Hickstead Derby course one-handed, riding with a broken arm in a sling.

During his career Ted worked with many notable names including Nick Skelton, Lesley McNaught, Ben Maher, Geoff Luckett, Jane Hunter and Emma-Jane Brown.

Nick Skelton reflected “ I rode for Ted and Liz at the start of my career for 12 years and could write a book on those ‘entertaining’ times alone, but as well as this, it was also a time where I learnt a lot which was to hold me in good stead for the future. Ted was a larger-than-life character and an incredible face for the sport, but he was also a hard taskmaster and I am extremely grateful to him as I definitely wouldn’t

have achieved what I have in my life if it hadn’t been for Ted and Liz.

Stratford Riding Club Sponsor RDA

Rider Kathryn Burnett Over the past couple of years Stratford-upon-Avon Riding Club have raised money for the RDA (Riding for the Disabled Association) and the Riding Club

Committee were approached by the RDA to see if we would like to sponsor a rider, and the committee agreed.

Stratford treasurer, Yvonne Stephenson, visited the RDA Centre at Compton Verney on 27th November 2018 to present a cheque for £200 to sponsor Kathryn.

Yvonne Stephenson – SUARC Treasurer, Kathryn Burnett – RDA Rider and Fiona Blake – RDA Sponsorship Secretary.

Kathryn, who is 55 years old and has Athetoid Cerebral Palsy, has been riding with Compton Verney RDA since August this year. She is training to compete at RDA events during the 2019 season and this sponsorship money will help fund these training sessions. Stratford Riding Club are pleased to be able to support Kathryn in this way and look forward to hearing about her achievements during the 2019 competition season.

The RDA riders have successfully competed at the RDA Regional Qualifier event culminating in 6 of them qualifying for the RDA National

Championships. It is the biggest event of its kind in the World and is held at Hartpury College each year in July. They entered classes in Dressage, Countryside Challenge, Showing and Show Jumping. The riders came home with a clutch of rosettes with 4 coming in the top 5 in their class. They all enjoyed the experience and came away feeling proud of what they had achieved. The Stratford Group of The RDA would not exist without such generous support from Stratford Riding Club and other sponsors/ donations. Tabitha Continues Her Liverpool Success Story

Tabitha Kyle added another title to her growing collection as the final day of the TheraPlateUK Liverpool International Horse Show got underway. The Leicestershire-based rider, a Liverpool winner last year, took the 138cms Championship, sponsored by Powder Systems, in fine style.

NEW HORSE ACCESS LOBBYING GROUP

HAC UK is lobbying to create a safe network in which the horse is included equally with other vulnerable road users in off-road route plans and funding schemes - without discrimination.

We are lobbying for local community routes and longer trails to be integrated into a safe and cohesive national network of sealed roads, unsealed roads and public rights of way, fully available to horses.

The group’s specific lobbying points are: 1. Improving road safety on roads that form part of the network.

2. Recording and ensuring the use of unsealed, unclassified country roads.

.

3. Extending inclusive multi-user access on existing routes where horses are not currently included.

4. Extending safe access through route creation. 5. Restoring historical routes.

6. Ensuring public good for public subsidies (with particular reference to the Agriculture Bill). Riding should be nationally recognised for the immense health and welfare benefits it has for a wide range of ages and abilities.

Last to go of six combinations in the jump-off, Tabitha timed her run perfectly on the 15-year-old gelding Lissduff Royal.

European Pony Championship team gold medallist and individual bronze medal winner Claudia Moore looked to have done enough with the 20-year-old Sonas Barney, clocking 26.42 seconds, but Tabitha had other ideas, posting a time of 25.30.

Charlotte Bevan and Rathcoona James took third, with Tom Francis-Jones and Kiltormer Hero finishing fourth.

"It's amazing to win here," Tabitha said. "It was a bit pressurised. I knew the only time I could make up in the jump-off was to the last fence.

"The pony likes this place. He won last year as well. I can really trust him. When I move him forward, he will just go with me, and he turns really quickly. "The people here are very encouraging, and I love coming to Liverpool, and we will certainly celebrate today."

The 128cms Championship, sponsored by Pony of the Year Show, went to Ireland's Senan Reape and 18-year-old Mickybo.

Ten combinations from 21 starters made the jump-off, and Senan delivered a classy round to emerge victorious, finishing more than a second clear of the field. The 10-year-old, from County Sligo, clocked a time of 26.20 seconds, with Sophie Wicks and Camizion taking second spot in 27.12, and third going to Fergal Holohan with Harri Potter in 28.96.

"This is my first time at the Liverpool show, and it's a great show. I love it," Senan said.

"I was a bit nervous going into what was a very big class, but I have done a good few competitions with the pony since I got him earlier this year. "I have been riding and competing since I was four, and it feels really good and very exciting to win here."
