( TIM STOCKDALE )
simplicity to his views at the political top as he did to his training but after all the seriousness of the interview Tim took my next questions in great humour:
If you were stranded on a desert island, who would you take?
“Ian Millar because he is a super guy and wouldn’t stab you in the back for the food and Tiffany Foster for obvious reasons, but I’m a married man so you can’t put that and somebody that could play golf!”
What do you do for fun outside horses? “I play golf, my son is an avid golfer and plays off 7, and we try and go and play golf with each other at least once a week. I am a poor golfer, but I am a very keen one. I can relate golf to horses because it is not a fixed sport, even the best golfer in the world is going to make mistakes. The key to being good at anything is to make a mistake and not letting it bother you, by learning to accept defeat gives you the desire to win.”
What drives you to keep going, to keep riding horses week in and week out?
“I enjoy riding horses and I enjoy the job I do. I think I am very lucky to do the job I do quite frankly and it’s a bit embarrassing really because people do what I do for fun, but I do it for a living. I have been very lucky, and our sport has been very good to me.”
As the interview came to its natural conclusion, Tim spoke passionately about an up and coming mare in his yard called Cacharel, it is then that his passing becomes more frustratingly tragic to me. It was not just about being at the top of his sport that drove Tim but his ongoing journey to maintain it. “When I finally hang my boots, I would like people to look back and say, you know what, he was listed for eight Olympic games on six different horses, he got four different horses to Championship level. When I am fifty-five and Cacharel comes to age, I will get more pleasure from people saying ‘oh my goodness he’s done it again and found another one’ than any accolade in the sport.”
