us fill more than 50 green bins and six bags of tins and bottles and remove half a three-piece suite! We clear and tidy the verges, cut the grass in places, trim hedges and prune trees as well as painting some of our lamp posts, the paint which we supply from our own funds. We are also looking at the possibility of replacing some of the signage on the cycle path.

We recently carried out a survey to find groups that would like to paint murals on the walls of the under passes near the main road on the way to Sainsbury’s. This was to prevent and deter the graffiti that is currently occurring. We have had a fantastic response and these areas have now been decorated by the likes of ‘Ewe Move’ and ‘Quince Honey Farm’ and we only have two sections of the under passes to complete.

We also recently cleared the walkway between the Old Bideford Road and the Roundswell

Industrial estate which was so overgrown that two people could not pass one another, you can see pictures of how it looks now on our Facebook page.

However, having noted our aims and some of our achievements, we are only a few, of mostly ageing residents, many of us in our seventies, and there is a limit to what we can do. With this

newsletter we are hoping to reach out to other likeminded people on the Roundswell Village estate. We cannot represent everyone, but we would like to encourage other groups to get together to keep their local areas looking clean and tidy. As we all know the period of austerity that we are currently going through is far from over and the jobs that we would normally expect to be done by the local authority and highways are not being carried out. We know that many people will say “we pay our rates, so we should expect the council to carry out their duties”. But cash strapped Councils have

many demands on their limited resources and keeping our road sides and verges tidy falls very low on their agenda.

If everyone just kept the pavement and roadside immediately in front of their property clean and free from weeds the whole area would be a far nicer place to live; and maybe consider taking a litter picker and bag with you when you walk your dog, we can help with these if you get in touch. If, however you would like to be involved with our group you can contact us via our website or our

Facebook page, just search RRA or come along to one of our meetings, on the second Thursday of every month at 7.45pm at Sainsbury’s Café.

If you would like to form a Residents Association for your area and would like some help with setting it up we would be pleased to give you the benefit of our experience, we are a community group and

have a constitution and we would be pleased to help if we can.
