met and ensure the agreements are fair and reasonable,” says Reeve. Another benefit is the
actual match. While the Reeves don’t live on the property, the Glasbergens do. Reeve appreciates Glasbergen’s mentorship. The Reeves watch his two alpacas from time to time and Glasbergen, former president of the Lower Mainland Sheep Producers Association, will watch their animals if they need to be away for a day or two. “They’ve been quite accommodating,” says Reeve, adding that Glasbergen is helpful at troubleshooting. “Working alone and on a
different schedule than from 9-to-5, it’s nice to have someone to check in with, chat with.”
Land leasing not new
While farmers in BC have been leasing land for decades, fewer farmers mean existing landowners don’t always know where to turn to find someone to take over their farms. Meanwhile, land costs can discourage new entrants from looking.

Smith has facilitated eight matches in Metro Vancouver
and the Fraser Valley since the program began, and a handful more are in the works. She’s excited that the BC
Ministry of Agriculture came forward September 18 with a one-year infusion of $300,000 for the program as part of its new entrant strategy for young producers. It follows $25,000 in federal-provincial funding granted in January. The new funds will support the hiring of four land- matchers to serve the entire province. These include

The land matchers will
develop a register of land and farmers seeking land in each region. They’re also required to make an undisclosed number of matches in their first year. The funding will support four land-matching events to help make that happen.
Plenty of interest
Young Agrarians has fielded 237 inquires from people looking for land and 280 offering land since 2016. Smith says this demonstrates the need for the type of hands-on support a land- matcher provides. Smith says most interest
comes from smaller scale producers across sectors but she anticipates some larger pieces of Okanagan land to come forward given past inquires, including ranch properties. “We’ve supported leases
for farmers doing vegetable production, livestock, orchards, to someone who has looked for land for a cricket farm,” she explains. “Ultimately, the goal is to support farmers in establishing sustainable, financially viable businesses.”
