BCYAF grants support key 4-H initiatives $100,000

awarded during the PNE

agriculture programs in urban schools were the big beneficiaries of BC Youth in Agriculture Foundation grants handed out during the annual Pacific National Exhibition Ag Auction, August 30. Most years, the grants total $30,000 to $40,000, representing the proceeds of the previous year’s Ag Auction. However, this year’s grants totalled almost $90,000 thanks to a special $50,000 contribution from the Vancouver Foundation. While Agriculture in the

Classroom usually receives the largest grant from the BCYAF, that was not the case this year. AITC received a grant of $10,000, half of what it received last year. The largest individual grant went to BC 4-H, which received $26,000 to support the BC 4-H Ambassador program, the 2018 Food for Thought seminar and the new Discover 4-H Camps initiative. A total of $30,000 went to

support three school programs: Fresh Roots’ SOYL program, Project Pickle and the Farm Roots Mini-School. Sprouted in East Vancouver in 2009, Fresh Roots helps schools across Metro

program that offers a seven- week summer leadership program at the Vancouver Technical and David Thompson Secondary School farms. Students develop skills in growing, cooking and selling food and receive stipends and credits for participating. Project Pickle is a

partnership between Delta School District and Kwantlen Polytechnic University and involves classroom instruction as well as hands-on learning on several “farms” located at local elementary schools. The BCYAF grant will help build school farm infrastructure and provide internships to maintain the farms. The Farm Roots Mini- School is another partnership between Delta School District and Kwantlen. Grade 10-12 students attend the school, which is basically an eight- acre farm at Boundary Bay. At the school, they learn to design, plan and build a mini- farm. The students alternate between attending the farm

school and their regular school on a daily basis. Delta South MLA and Liberal agriculture critic Ian Paton, a member of the PNE’s Agriculture Advisory Committee, conducted the annual auction, which again raised well over $30,000 for the BCYAF. Those funds will be distributed during next year’s event. Superior Poultry provided

the largest individual bid at the auction, paying $2,500 for a wine cellar starter pack donated by Okanagan Crush Pad. The next highest bid was Ed Leong’s offer of $2,000 for a guitar signed by members of the Doobie Brothers donated by the PNE.
