Jenna’s range is pretty impressive, morphing from the Queen to Glaswegian mother in The Cry, via various accented roles in between. In fact she loves to put on an accent, using it as the first tool to get into character when she reads a new part. She worked with Stephen Poliakoff in Dancing On Edge who apparently interviewed her for seven months, testing her in all the different roles, before casting her as Rosie, the journalist.
J
enna Coleman’s career has been eclectic and varied from the start, going from Emmerdale Farm when she was 19 years old to The Cry at the age of 32.
She is probably best known for her role as Queen Victoria in the ITV drama series Victoria, though many fans would remember her as the companion to Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi in the time travelling saga, Doctor Who.
Coleman was born in Blackpool, the daughter of Karen and Keith Coleman, and has an elder brother named Ben who is a joiner like his father. She started acting while at school, joining the theatre company In Yer Space and performed in the play Crystal Clear at the Edinburgh Festival, for which she won an award.
Appropriately enough she is dating her on screen husband in Victoria in real life, Prince Albert played by Tom Hughes, a dashing and handsome model, actor and musician. They now live together in North London and will work together again on the set of Victoria in 2019 role playing their romance in front of millions.
Coleman is ambassador for the One To One Children’s Fund in South Africa and for Place2Be, a charity focused on emotional and therapeutic support in schools. She is also keenly aware of the #MeToo movement, that for it to succeed it has to be an ongoing process, not just a momentary movement, one that people continue to support to effect real and lasting change. Though she herself has never suffered any abuse, she was asked to wear a bikini for castings in LA which she refused, regarding it as somewhat unnecessary.
Her ultimate ambition is to make her own film one day such as period adaptation and with the experience she has built up already, I think it’s safe to say that we will soon be seeing her behind the camera, directing something of her own. Catch her in The Cry now.
