Siemens, AES JV wins
60-MW battery storage deal in UK
Fluence Energy LLC
will supply 60 MW of battery capacity for the second phase of UK Power Reserve’s 120-MW energy storage portfolio in the UK. Fluence, the energy
storage specialist formed by Siemens AG and AES Corporation, was previously selected to supply batteries for the first 60-MW phase of the project. Both phases of the project will use the energy storage joint venture's (JV) Advancion platform. The first phase, including
three 20-MW of battery storage systems, is currently under construction at sites in the Midlands and the North West of the UK. It is scheduled to become operational by the end of this winter. The full 120-MW capacity
is to be switched on by the end of the summer of 2019, ahead of the winter 2020 deadline The joint venture from
Siemens and AES will deliver large scale energy storage across three projects in Bolton, Melton Mowbray and Warrington. Fluence will deliver
20MW of storage to each site, where the battery capacity won in each 2016 Capacity Market (CM) contract suggests that at least two solutions will be deployed. The deal represents
Fluence’s first projects in the UK as the joint venture, with both Siemens and AES having delivered projects in the UK previously. UKPR will utilise the company’s Advancion energy storage solution, expected to be deployed in this instance using batteries from LG Chem.

ScottishPower to close down fossil-fuel generators
ScottishPower has initiated a programme involving the complete closure of its fossil fuel generation fleet in favour of investment in a 100 % renewables mix. A key elements of this
paradigm shift is the transfer of its conventional generating fleet to Drax for £702 million. The announcement makes ScottishPower the first UK- based integrated energy company to fully exit coal and gas generation. The company has publicly stated it plans to invest £5.2 billion in a UK pipeline of renewables to double its existing 2.7 GW on and offshore wind energy- based generating portfolio . ScottishPower also has
plans to invest in smart energy technologies and grid networks and . Eight generating sites,
representing a total of 2,566 MW of capacity, have been purchased by Drax from ScottishPower. The new acquisitions
nclude the 420 MW Shoreham CCGT in southern England, the 805 MW Damhead Creek CCGT in Kent, and the 715 MW Rye House CCGT in Hertfordshire. Drax will also receive three
hydropower plants in the deal (Cruachan, 440 MW pumped storage, Lanark 17 MW hydro and Galloway 109 MW hydro). “Energy companies must

be part of the solution to climate change,” comments Ignacio Galán, chairman and CEO of Iberdrola, ScottishPower’s parent company. “Iberdrola is acting now to cut carbon emissions 30 % by 2020 & be fully carbon neutral by 2050.”
