Burglar snapped by a neighbour
A BURGLAR who broke into a Maidstone home and filled a duvet cover fullof stolen items, including wedding and engage- ment rings, has been jailed for nearly two years. Police were called on April 1 6 ,
after twomenwere seen entering a house in Jasmine Court. A witness had taken a photo of
the offenders leaving shortly after, as they carried the bed cover and a holdall with the victim’s posses- sions inside. A suspicious Range Rover
parked close bywas traced by offi- cers to 2 6 -year-old Alfie Springth- orpe’s home in Eltham. It was then spotted a few days
later in the Shipbourne area, near Tonbridge, on April
2 1 and
Springthorpewas arrested. Aftershave and motorcycle
gloves were discovered inside the Range Rover, which were identi- fied by the victim as having been stolen. During a police interview,
Springthorpe said the front door of the burgled property had been left open and he had found acannabis cultivation growing inside. He also claimed he had intended
to steal plants and whilst inside also took some of the items re- ported asmissing. Springthorpe filled aduvet from
the burgled home with items in- cluding jewellery, handbags, cloth- ing, perfume and cash. Kent Police crime scene investi-
gators found no evidence to sup- port his claims of acultivation and Springthorpe appeared before Maidstone Crown Court charged with burglary. He pleaded guilty and on Sep-
tember 2 4 was sentenced to 2 2 months’ imprisonment. His accom- plice remains at large. Detective Constable Raj Dusanjh
said: “Springthorpe helped himself to cash and a number of precious items including engagement rings and wedding bands. “He then concocted astory about
the property being used to grow cannabis in an attempt to diminish his actions. “Thanks largely to the vigilance
of local residents, Springthorpe has nowfaced justice for his crimes.”
