The Artichoke, Broome

IT is now more than 18 months since husband and wife team, Colin and Alison, took over at the Artichoke, Broome. In that time the couple have made plenty of changes to the business, with the latest being a com- plete overhaul of the garden. Colin explains that previ- ously the beer garden was split in two with a row of tall conifers overshadowing the whole garden and block- ing the sunlight out. As you can imagine, with a summer like we have had (and still having), Colin wanted to change that. The work has been sig-

nificant but now customers can enjoy a large open plan garden as the conifers have come down. The benefits of this are immediately appar- ent as the garden is bathed in sun throughout the day and the views over the surround- ing fields and meadows are stunning. Freshly laid lawn and beautifully planted flower beds make this a beer garden to be proud of. This is a freehouse so

Colin and Alison can stock whatever they like behind the bar. Visitors to the Arti- choke have a choice of ten ales from which to choose from the Tap Room with a

further four bitters from the cellar. Alongside the ales you will find a selection of lager and cider on tap as well as a good wine list, a large selection of whisky and 25 different gins. There is a range of bottled and soft drinks available as well as fresh tea and coffee. It is fair to say there is something for everyone – no matter what your taste. Those looking for some-

going on here, whether it is the charity quiz on the sec- ond Tuesday of each month (all entry fees go to All Hallows Hospice), live mu- sic or a themed food night. However, the next big event on the calendar is the Beer Festival. The Beer Festival is tak-

ing place October 5th, 6th and 7th. There will be at least 20 beers as well as a selection of local ciders and

gins. Over the course of the weekend there will be all sorts of entertainment and live music including The Pi- anoman playing on Saturday and a group called the Den-

tones on Sunday. Of course, you can’t have a beer festi- val without food. Colin is planning to have a BBQ to make sure his customers are well fed. This is weather de- pendant – but rest assured there will be plenty of deli- cious food no matter what the weather is doing! The Beer Festival will be

in the main bar as well as a marquee on the patio, so there will be plenty of room for groups and families to spend the day making the most of the entertainment. Colin and Alison are

joined in the pub by their daughter Rebecca, the whole family are keen for the Ar- tichoke to be at the heart of the community and that is most certainly the case. In addition to the charities they support through their quiz- zes and various other events they also sponsor Alex Dod- dington, a local kart racer from Ditchingham, who is in the Cadet Class this year and will be in the Junior Rotax Class from January 2019. Colin used to race karts him- self and clearly loves being involved again. It is lovely to see one
