Broome Village Hall Gains a Quality Award

HAVE you heard the news about the Good Company Campaign for summer 2018? On behalf of our Village Hall

and all those outstanding groups that use the hall for their various clubs, Fred was the proud recipi- ent of a Certificate of Quality awarded by the Good Company Campaign at Wroxham on Nor- folk Day, Friday 27th July. Over the years since it was

first built, our village hall has been part of the village. The hall has always been a hub for village life; getting vegetables and fruit ready for market, for example, to being what it is today; some- where for people to meet and take part in many different groups and activities. Not just for Broome residents

but for the wider community and yes, it does play a big part in combating loneliness although up to now I don’t believe that we have really thought about that side of it. It is not until you sit down and think about what actu- ally goes on at the hall there is

something happening there most weeks for almost everyone. Years of coffee mornings and soup lunches have been “on the menu” and clubs as varied as Yoga to photography, bowls and gardening, have all brought people together at the hall; such an achievement for all those who volunteer to keep the groups going. Speaking of which, the village

hall management committee are looking for new committee members to help with making sure the hall moves forward with a fresh outlook for the future. You do not have to be a resident of Broome to be on the commit- tee, the only thing you need is to want to see the hall continue to be a place where people of every ability and age want to meet and enjoy the company of others. A true place to combat loneliness... Want to join us? Contact us on

HARLESTON Wives were wel- comed for the up and coming sea- son by our leader for this year, Daphne. A very interesting talk followed and was given by Mrs Norma Howell on Medical Detec- tion Dogs. She explained that the detection

dogs came about after a pet became very agitated around sniffing a mole on its owner’s leg, which turned out to be cancerous. From there trials and training started with dogs. With the dogs very acute awareness to smell it was found that they reacted to both breath and urines. Medical alert assistance dogs are used on a one to one patient basis and are

trained to draw attention before it becomes a more severe problem. They help in conditions such as type 1 Diabetes, Allergies, Addi- sons disease plus others. Bio Detection Dogs are used in

conjunctions with the NHS, oncologist and scientists. Their work includes sniffing urine sam- ples to trace various diseases including cancerous conditions. Medical Detection Dogs are a

charity. They are looking to the government to help with funding in the future for this amazing work which can save and improve many lives. Raffle prize winners included Rosemary and Ann.

professional wildlife photogra- pher, was on hand to talk to visi- tors and to judge his perceived best image in the show. This new trophy went to BCC mem- ber Holly Stranks LRPS, with her wonderfully vibrant and atmospherically lit portrait of her dog, Pippa. Kevin made comment on the extreme techni- cal difficulty of photographing a black dog on a black back- ground. Holly has been a pho- tographer for only a few years and is adamant that without the help and guidance given freely in her initial years as a member of BCC, many of the skills she needed to acquire to produce this image and obtain her LRPS (Licentiate of the Royal Photo- graphic Society) would have not been so easily obtained. A steady flow of visitors

throughout the day were treated to various presentations on the art and science of photography including imaging software usage and artistic guidance. Feasting at the ‘Happy Snap-

pers Cafe’, run by the members of the club, on a scrumptious array of homemade cakes and pastries was also something very well received by visiting mem- bers of the public. A large number of donated

photographic books was perused and many purchased to boost club funds. The substantially stocked tombola stall also pro- vided participating winners with some most interesting prizes. Bungay Camera Club Chair-

man, Peter Nixon would like to thank all those members who helped mount, man and run this important annual event for the club and for their dedication and efforts to make it a success. ‘Without the members rocking up and doing stuff the club just wouldn’t exist’ he said. Finally Bungay Camera Club

membership would very much like to thank all the members of the public who came along on the day for their support. They, together with their encouraging comments, make it all worth- while.
