started, is that right? That's like early social media? Absolutely, I still believe that networking is key; it’s how I my grew my business. Welcoming people into my home was a great way to network. Social media is a fantastic tool, but it can only get you so far. All of my best ideas and opportunities have been as a result of interesting conversations with interesting people.
I can imagine your own home is magnificent, are you ever content with a space or are you constantly striving as a designer? When I first walked into my home it was a derelict shell with incredibly high ceilings and impressive structural columns. As soon as I walked in, I was able to envisage the design of the space and feed off of the energy of the space. It was a real passion project and took 15 months to complete. I adore my home, it was the space I’d dreamed of for years, but I’m always adding new touches and pieces.
Between designing, TV, writing and running your business do you ever get 'off
duty time' and if so how do you like to spend it? I do, although it is limited! I love to spend it with my family in the countryside, especially my grandson Rudy – nothing beats being a ‘glammy’, nothing. I am fortunate enough to travel around the world with work, but it’s just wonderful to travel to new places and switch off with my loved ones. I always integrate some form of exercise into my day, even when my schedule is packed; it helps me sustain energy and maintain a positive mindset.
As a former Dragon, would you ever be tempted to do the show again? I would never say never, but I’m not sure where I would fit it in! I adore the show though and watch it still. I am always open to the prospect of new TV projects – watch this space…!
You are extremely successful, incredibly connected and have a beautiful home, but is there anything in life that has evaded you? Or anything yet to conquer? I really am extremely blessed; I have a wonderful family, incredible friends, a fantastic partner and I still get to do what I love to do every day. I can’t say that there is, although I’m sure I’ll find something else to challenge myself to in the future, there is always more to conquer and if you watch this space you will see what I am cooking up...!
I have a selection of crystals in various rooms of my home and before moving in I had my house cleansed and blessed, do you incorporate any of these 'rituals', for want of a better word, into your work? I love crystals and not just aesthetically, they are a great way to balance energy within the home. My daughter Natasha got me into them after she had learnt about them on a trip to India. The energy of a home is so important and I always strive to create harmony and a calming atmosphere when designing a space. We do incorporate some of these practices, especially who request it in Asia and India, for example the Hindu practice of ‘Vastu Shastra’ which means ‘science of architecture’.
