INT ERV I EW – K E L LY HOP P EN MBE

KE L LY HOP P EN MB E INTERIOR DESIGN QUEEN

Kelly Hoppen really needs little introduction; the 'Kelly Hoppen Look' is probably the most-copied interior design style the world over, although no-one does it quite like her. A savvy businesswoman, Kelly started designing before the days of Pinterest and Instagram, the days when being creative came from within rather than from swiping and pinning. Her celebrity client list is enviable, but as Kelly explains in this interview, she never set out to design for celebrities, that just happened. From yachts to QVC, Kelly has broadened her appeal to make her design concepts accessible to all, something she was very determined and considered in doing. I chatted to Kelly about how her career began, about interior trends and how limiting they can be, as she shares with Live 24-Seven magazine how blessed she is to do what she does...

Interview by Katie McPhilimey

Kelly, it must be enormously flattering to have the 'Kelly Hoppen Look' widely recognised and used by people around the world? Of course, it is incredible to have the ‘Kelly Hoppen Look’ internationally acknowledged and I am extremely humbled to still be able to create timeless interiors after more than 40 years in the business.

How did it all start for you, as today with Google and Pinterest, it’s easy to copy someone's fabulous interior ideas – your interior ideas – but when you started your career you had to actively

'create' and 'find' didn't you? It all started for me at only 16 ½ years old. A family friend wanted his kitchen redoing and I jumped at the chance. If I’m honest, it was a bit of a disaster (kitchens are one of the hardest rooms to do, which I quickly learned...) but I got it done! I always had an eye for design, but I developed my own east meets west style. I had to go out and find inspiration from travelling, street markets, anywhere I could, there was no such thing as Google, Pinterest or Instagram back then! Reading back David Tang’s foreword for my first book East Meets West says it for me, inspiration from one’s imagination is far less
