JUNE 2018• COUNTRY LIFE IN BC 4-H BC thanks partners for their support

Ambassador Sara Kate Smith emcees using speaking skills she learned in 4-H by RONDA PAYNE

ABBOTSFORD – Youth who move through the 4-H program gain a range of skills, becoming the pride of partners and other supporters of the program. On May 20, 4-H BC honoured its sponsors at a partner recognition event that also coincided with the organization’s ambassador training, providing an opportunity for sponsors to meet some of the youth their support benefits. About half of 4-H BC’s provincial sponsors were able to attend the special event. “The event is in conjunction with the 4-H BC ambassador training weekend,” explains 4-H BC fund development co-ordinator Belinda Field. “Ambassadors are specially designated individuals from each region whose job is to promote and be the face of 4-H.” One of those ambassadors is Sara Kate Smith. “I started in 4-H when I was seven years old,” she says. “I am a second-generation 4-H member. My dad really encouraged us to start… he thought it would really benefit us and it has.” Sara, 18, is the oldest child in her family. Her two younger

sisters are also in the 4-H program. She is one of 18 4-H BC ambassadors representing seven regions around the province. “It’s the best possible youth development program that

there is,” she explains. “I was able to find my passion in it, which is public speaking.” She’s so passionate about public speaking, she started a

program within 4-H called Speak Out Loud. “I really wanted to create a side of 4-H where members had the chance to view communication from a professional standpoint and gain skills to bring into their future careers,” says Sara.

Sara is one of 10 4-H representatives selected to attend the United Nations committee on world food security in Rome in October, and one of just two from North America. It’s youth like Sara that encourage the support of

organizations like the BC Youth in Agriculture Foundation. Bob Brandsma is president of the PNE’s agriculture advisory board for the organization and he notes they raise about $35,000 for various causes. “What amazes me is the commitment of these kids,” he says.

“You’ll hear these kids say, ‘This is my last year in 4-H and I hate to leave.’ Seeing that, you feel proud that you can be part of that a little bit.” The evening included presentations to partners like the BC

Youth in Agriculture Foundation, Country Life in BC and Aubrey and Barbara Searle, among a number of others on hand. A candlelight presentation honoured partners who couldn’t attend, past 4-H members, parents and others who support the organization. A video about 4-H was shown that opened with “We are the future of Canada” and ended with the 4-H motto, “we are learning to do by doing.” “It reinforces your confidence in the youth of the next generation,” says Brandsma. “I just love to see that.”

4-H BC ambassadors Lana Harach, Jacinta Meir and Dawsyn Remillard and Frisco the 4-H mascot were on hand to show their appreciation to 4-H BC provincial sponsors in Abbotsford, May 20. RONDA PAYNE PHOTOS
