THE MVP’S OF HOME SHOWS

HOWEVER, HAVE GOT TO BE JEFF LEWIS, DAVID BROMSTAD AND VERN YIP, WITH A COMBINED TOTAL OF, WELL, IT’S MORE THAN 20 YEARS ON THE AIR! (Gal, math is hard...)

WHAT’S IN A NAME? So, there’s research on just how many

LGBTQ participants have been featured on House Hunters alone, with 4.3 percent of the show’s episodes featuring our demographic. However, I feel that networks could retool existing shows and give them a real “homo improvement” premise. First up: Man Caves, whose premise is

Vern Yipappeared onTrading Spacesduring its fourth season, is one of the judges on HGTV’sDesign Star, as well as hosting that network’sDeserving Designfor four years. Oh, and he also hosted an HGTV special called Urban Oasis, which saw him designing a loft in the Trump International Hotel in Chicago. I guess three out of four ain’t bad. vernyip.com

WhenFlipping Out returns this September for its 11th season, Lewis and company will be attempting to—stop me if you’ve heard this one before—juggle “career, home and family.” Seriously, is it a pre-requisite now for gay men on home improvement shows to have at least one child? Speaking of juggling: Lewis will more than likely be showing his, uh, perfection- ist streak as the challenges of fatherhood, coupled with tight deadlines, loom large for the house flipper. bravotv.com/flipping-out

Another show featuring Yip proved very popular among “the community” isTrading Spaces, now enjoying a successful reboot on TLC. The original host Paige Davis is back, and so are returning designers: Genevieve Gorder, Vern Yip, Frank Bielec, Laurie Smith, Doug Wilson and Hildi Santo-Tomas. It will be interesting to see if Tomas will be resurrecting her penchant for decorating walls with hay and vinyl records… Gurl. Also back are carpenters Carter Oosterhouse and Ty Pennington, plus there will be new castmembers and Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent will appear as guest designers. tlc.com/tv-shows/trading-spaces

David Bromstad parlayed his 2006 win on HGTV Design Star into a career as “host with the most” for on such shows as:Color Splash with David Bromstad, Color Splash Miami andMy Lottery Dream Home. Fun fact: Bromstad was laid off as an illustrator for Disney and that led him to start his own company, Bromstad Studio, designing fantasy bedrooms for children. I thinks he may have a few clients in certain fellow designers... I’m just sayin.’bromstad.com

Tiny House Nationon HGTV has proven very popular with gay men. Straight up factors seem to be its two hosts, including silver fox John Weisbarth and hot, former pro skier Zack Giffin, who serves as the show’s builder. He seems like he could be very at-home as a cub, from the look of it. Not-so-surprisingly, the show has not tested well with size queens. fyi.tv/shows/tiny-house-nation

already pretty gay of “wives and girlfriends just don’t understand that sometimes a man needs a place in the home to call his very own, where he can relax, hang out with his friends, and be surrounded by the interests closest to his heart.” While this version features guys enjoying sports, the new incar- nation could showcase gays trying to escape their significant others, to spaces where they can do all of the aforementioned activities the same as his straight counterparts. See, we’re not so different after all! What? Did you think it was going to be all about bedazzling your starfish? Flip or Flop would be rechristened Top

improvement “how to” or “redo” there’s quite a wealth of shows to tune into. HGTV mainly it seems, but that makes scads of sense since it’s the acronym for “Homosexual Gay Television!”You say it stands for “Home & Garden Television?” My bad. Happy viewing!
