Transformations Overcoming Obstacles
There’s a ton of great reads in this month’s issue and
I for one am excited to share them. Each has a unique perspective on life and what it takes to rise above the fray and make the best of any given situation. Shea Diamond is a trans musician who found her
way out of circumstances that would overwhelm almost anyone. She ran away from home at age 14 and found shelter as a ward of the state until the age of 17. Then in desperation, as a way to pay for sex reassignment surgery, she committed armed robbery fatefully ending in a nearly 10-year prison sentence… ironically incarcerated in a men’s prison. She survived and has transformed her experience, literally finding her voice and along with songwriter Justin Tranter, creating an EP titledSeen It All. Go out and grab it, it’s truly inspiring. I spoke with Nico Santos for the second time, the
first was just as he was beginning as Mateo on the hit showSuperstore and his career was taking off. He’s now playing Oliver inCrazy Rich Asians, the story of, you guessed it, a crazy rich Asian family whose son is in love with an econ professor and he brings her to meet the family. She is transformed by the experi- ence and learns to stand and take her place in her own right, despite biting hostility from friends and a dragon lady momma. Santos talked about what it was like to do the film, to shoot in a world he left at 16, being gay and what it was like to be surrounded by people who looked like him. “There is something really special about being around that part of the
world, surrounded by people who look like you and a culture that you’re familiar with. I’m so lucky I’ve gotten to play two Asian queer characters, one on television and now one inCrazy Rich Asians and to be able to show that gay people aren’t all just one thing.” Bravo, Nico and we love you for doing it. Lee Alexander McQueen and the new documen-
tary about him is another deeply transformative story. It is an amazing reminder of what raw talent, determination and seeing beyond the normal realm can do. His work transformed the fashion industry, changing what was once just clothing worn, into clothing that became art. As he said, “Fashion is a big bubble and sometimes I just feel like popping it.” Though life wasn’t easy for him, his demons were great, and sadly they ultimately caused him to leave this world at much too early an age. The gifts he left us with, though constructed with earthly materials, were otherworldly. Like he said, “I would go to the end of my dark side and pull these horrors out of my soul and put them on the catwalk.” I wonder how many of we mere mortals can transform our nightmares into something so beautiful? There is a great deal of darkness and light in all of
us and in particular, in today’s political realm for the LGBT community, it’s reached a fevered intensity. The tendency is to react to it, but brilliance often comes with the action of bringing that bleak reality into the light of transformation.
