ISLANDS IN THE STREAM... SURFING THE GAY WEB
by tim parks It used to be way back in the day, summer signaled a change in your regularly-scheduled program-
ming and our favorite shows went on hiatus until fall, leaving us with only reruns of the previous season to watch again. We could always stay outside I guess, but that was after the streetlights came on, which technically meant it was time to come home. Wow, that makes me seem so, I refuse to use that three-letter “o--” word, let’s just say “seasoned.” That’s the ticket, yeah, because nothing says I’m my “internet age” like a 32-year-old catchphrase fromSaturday Night Live. However, in today’s technologically-advanced society, there is never any downtime from the boob
tube with streaming services like Hulu, Netflix and Dekkoo, etc. It’s almost like, do I dare say it, there’s almost too much on television? It seems like I haven’t finished one show, when another pops up and demands my full, half-attention. There are always a lot of balls in the air television-wise—oops, train of thought derailment with the mention of two of my favorite things—air and television, you perves. The short of the long of it, is that we will let you know about some shows that you can watch, all
but being an island in this particular stream. I mean that is what we are, after all, it’s like there’s no in-between…how could we be wrong, really?
WELCOME TO BOYS TOWN
After Forever Starring not one, but two Hollywood crushes
West 40s Described as a “coming-of-middle-age
comedy” in which five Manhattanites pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness… or is it just the penis? Let’s just say it’s a fair bet that it’s both. As these adventures transpire in their Hell’s Kitchen gayborhood, the men also discover what it’s like to be “a woman of a certain age” when they begin having 20-somethings call them “Daddy” for the first time. Ugh, I hate that! I’m more of the fun, drunk Uncle type myself. Anyhoo, episodes streaming
onwest40s.com, will also explore the nuances of dating apps, clubbing, proper etiquette for a lap dance and drag lingo!
Paper Boys Something of an anomaly in the world of
telling queer stories, save for FX’sPose, with nearly three quarters of the cast being Asian- American, African-America, Latino or Trans. ThisDekkoo series chronicles the misadven-
tures of Cole (series co-creative Kyle Cabral) who moves to San Francisco on the down low, hoping to kick start his dead-end career and to attend his straight best friend Daren’s (Nathan Brown) engagement party. When said enfianced event is revealed to be a mistake, Cole isn’t the only one making changes in his life. There is also a magical sketch book that comes into play…so, there’s that.
A Very English Scandal Hugh Grant returns to the gay fray in the three-part miniseries now streaming onAmazon Prime. His first foray 31 years earlier—yes you read that right—was in the movieMaurice, circa 1987, in which he played a turn-of-the- century homosexual. He and the film were truly yummy as only a Merchant Ivory film can be.A Very English Scandal is a true story centering on Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe, who was tried for conspiring to murder his ex-lover Norman Scott (Ben Whishaw) in 1979. The horror of it all!
I’ve had over the years, Mitchell Anderson (Party of Five) and Kevin Spirtas (Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood.) Hey, don’t judge! The drama, streaming onAmazon Prime, centers on how one man must go on and relearn to immerse himself into gay waters after his partner dies. If you aren’t up for getting into a new series, even though most of these run 15 minutes at most, there are a few movies to check out in “the stream.”
Whatta Lark The titular drag queen in thisAmazon series
(Christopher Graham), advises her childless, chil- dren book author friend (Tara Platt) on life issues. We’ll just let your imagination run wild here…
I’m Fine AnotherDekkoo web series, this one in its
second season, is a dark comedy that continues to tell the story of hoe, err WeHo resident, Nate (Perry Powell) and his close-knit Millennial friends as they navigate this thing called life, dealing with hookups, breakups and open relationships – oh my!
