August 2018 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 19. Lobster Boat Racing - Bass Harbor, Moosabec & Stonington

Nathan Jones’ SAILOR’S WAY [47’ Johns Bay Boat; 1,000-hp Caterpillar], the newest boat from John’s Bay Boat Company won the John's Bay Boat Co. Race with a speed of 28.2 mph.

they ran up together. They fi nished bow to bow, but over fi rst by just a few feet was GOLD DIGGER. Ten boats were on the line for Class M(A) and the winner was Milton Merchant’s MISS TONIA [Libby 41; 500- hp Cummins]. KIMBERLY ANN and MISS AMITY were ready to face off again in Class M(B) and this time the win went to MISS AMITY giving them each two wins for the year. Joshua Beal’s KAYLA ANNE [Calvin Beal 44; 1,000-hp MAN] won Class N at Bass Harbor and he did it again at Moos- abec. An extra race was run for boats 45 feet and over, any hp and eight boats came to the line with fi rst going to Ryan Geel’s CALEB AND BRAYDEN [Wayne Beal 46, 750-hp John Deere]. The only boat in Class O was WILD, WILD WEST who came up the course with the only entrant in Wooden Boat Race A, WIDE OPEN. There were no entrants in Wooden Boat B. The winner of the Gasoline Free-for-All

was WIDE OPEN. Seven boats were on the line for the

Diesel Free-for-All, but everyone knew who the winner was going to be and WILD, WILD WEST did not disappoint. The Moosabec races divide up the

working and non-working lobster boats for the World’s Fastest Lobster Boat races. The only boat in the non-working race was WILD, WILD WEST so she came up the course by herself. That left four boats to battle it out for the World’s Fastest Working Lobster Boat and most were not surprised when GOLD DIGGER crossed for the win. Next up, the Stonington Races on 8 July.

STONINGTON – With four races down (Boothbay, Rockland, Bass Harbor and Moosabec) it was on to the biggest race venue of the year, Stonington. Being cen- trally located, in the middle of the highest population of lobster boats and having a great party the night before and during the races, Stonington constantly draws over one hundred entrants. The forecast was for a great day and

that is exactly what we had. Sign-ups started early and we ended up with 106 entrants. Only three Gasoline classes had no entrants, A, D and E. We had several boats that were either

new or we had not seen in a while: Andy Pratt’s SPITFIRE [Mitchell Cove 32; 225- hp John Deere] in Class B; Stuart Bray’s ALWAYS SOMETHING [Osmond 35; 450-hp Cummins] Class G; Joe Wallace’s CARLA JEAN [Northern Bay 36; 460-hp Caterpillar]; Brian Billings’ DREAD- NOUGHT [South Shore 38; 550-hp John Deere], and Tyler Bemis’ STARLIGHT EXPRESS [Holland 38; 525-hp John Deere] Class H; Ben Sparhawk’s PATRICIA LYNN [Northern Bay 38; 565-hp Caterpillar] Class J; Andy Smith’s SYLVIA MAE [Mussel Ridge 46; 750-hp John Deere] Class M(B);

Troy Lewis’ HEATHER EMILY [Mussel Ridge 46; 900-hp Scania], Tad Miller’s MALLARY SKY [Wayne Beal 40; 1000- hp Caterpillar], Gary Eaton’s MY GRAINE II [Mussel Ridge 46; 800-hp Scania] and Nathan Jones’ SAILOR’S WAY [47’ Johns Bay Boat; 1,000-hp Caterpillar] Class N. The fi rst race of the day was Work Boat

Class A and as they went by it looked as though Kolbe Hardy in GUESS WHAT [14’, 25-hp Yamaha] was going to win with ease, but something happened and he ended up third. First went to Thomas Hutchinson [16’; 30-hp Suzuki]. J-BIRD [Calvin Beal 16; 90-

hp Mercury] was a constant competitor for several years, but we have not seen her much the last couple of years. Well, last winter she was sold to David Ames II of Matinicus and she made her fi rst appearance this year at Stonington. She was going to battle Gavin Holland’s BABY BARON [Holland 14, 30-hp Yamaha], which had not raced since 2011. As they came up the course in Class B, it was all J-BIRD. Five boats lined up for the fi nal Work Boat Race, Class C and the winner was Robbie Eaton’s U-2 [Mako 20; 175-hp Johnson]. One of the special races of the day is the

John’s Bay Boat Company Race and fi ve of them were on the line. Last year’s winner was Ben Weed’s EMMA & ANDREW [John’s Bay 44; 700-hp Caterpillar] and this year the win went to Nathan Jones’ new SAILOR’S WAY. The Gasoline Classes are dwindling

quickly and there were just three boats signed up in two of the fi ve classes (Class B and Class C) so they were run down together. Two of the racers, WIDE OPEN and J. T. BEAN were in Class B and WIDE OPEN
