Andrew Taylor's BLUE EYED GIRL trying her best to keep up with Tom Clemons' MOTIVATION.

BASS HARBOR – The fi rst two races of the year, at Boothbay and Rockland, has set the stage for the rest of the year’s races. Many of the rumours are answered as to who did what over the winter, what is new, who decided to return or come out for the fi rst time, and how they compared to the other competitors. This year we have had more entrants and that translates into a more interesting year. Bass Harbor has always drawn a lot of

racers, mostly from around Mount Desert Island, Swan’s Island and Frenchboro. This may be because they do not charge an entry fee, but I think it is because it is always a fun event and so far the weather has been in- credible. This year the weather forecast had been for cloudy skies and maybe scattered showers, but it turned out to be a bright, hot sunny day. When signups were done, we had 69

entrants, which was just four off their best turn out.

for the fi rst time and they were: Robert Davis’ 3RD

There were several boats showing up GENERATION [Calvin Beal 34;

500-hp FPT]; Chris Goodwin’s DREW & HENRY [Osmond 40; 500-hp John Deere]; and Chris Moore’s MISS ALICE [Mussel Ridge 46; 800-hp Caterpillar]. The new boat was Drew Eaton’s MONEY SHOT [Wayne Beal 46; 650-hp Caterpillar], which was launched this spring. We had some carnage take place in the fi rst week of racing. Ed Shirley’s MISS

KARLEE [Mitchell Cove 32, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] had developed a serious engine issue as he discovered antifreeze in the oil. Roy Fagonde’s LAST DESIGN [E. Libby, Jr., 31; 300-hp Caterpillar], also had an engine issue, but they were thinking it was due to an intake that may not have been big enough constricting the air going to the turbo.

The fi rst race of the day was scheduled

to be Work Boat Class A (Skiff s 16-feet and under with outboards up to 30 hp, Operator 18 years and younger), but there were no en- trants. Three boats were on the line for Class B (Inboards, outboards, or outdrives31-90 hp), and this was won by Cameron Lunt’s SEA SPRAY [19’ Gilley; 75-hp Mercury] by two boat lengths. In the fi nal Work Boat Class, Class C (Inboards, outboards or out- drives 91 hp and over) four boats came to the line and the winner was Cole McEnroe’s DIRTY DEEDS [22’; 150-hp Suzuki]. There were only two boats entered in

the fi ve Gasoline Classes. There were no en- trants in Class A (4 & 6 cylinder 24 feet and over), Class C (V8, 376 to 525 cid, 24 feet

and over), Class D (V-8, 376 to 540 cid, 28 feet and over) and Class E (Over 525 cid, 28 feet and over, Turbos/superchargers). Both entrants were racing in Class B (V8, Up to 375 cid, 24 feet and Wayne Rich’s WIDE OPEN [26’ Robert Rich; 350 Chevrolet] took the top spot. Now came the Diesel Classes and most

of them had several or more entrants. In Class A (up to 235 hp, 24-31 feet) eight boats were lined up and sent down the course. The winner was Jacob Kirby’s BARE BOTTOM [BHM 25, 220-hp John Deere]. Four boats were at the start of Class B (up to 235 hp, 32 feet and over) and it was a close race and the winner was David Schlaefer’s CAITLYN [Osmond 32; 225-hp John Deere]. Class C (236 to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet) was missing LAST DESIGN and Daniel Eaton’s WHITE LIGHTNING [AJ 28; 305-hp Cummins] and it was all Steven Osgood’s VENOM [Mussel Ridge 28; 300-hp Sisu] getting the win. Shawn Stanley’s MISS MARGO [Mitchell Cove 35; 300-hp John Deere] easily took the top spot in Class D (236-335 hp, 34 feet and over). For the fi rst time this

year Kenton Feeney’s BAD INFLUENCE [Holland 32, 350-hp Yanmar] came up from Jonesport and grabbed fi rst from Erin Hinckley’s MYRA GRAYCE [Crowley Beal 33; 365-hp Iveco] in Class E (336 to 435 hp, 24-33 feet). Most race fans know Winifred Alley’s VICTORIA ANN [Calvin Beal 34; 430-hp Cummins] well she has been renamed AIDEN MARINER and she continued her winning ways in Class F (336- 435 hp, 34 feet and over). The real battle was for second between Parker Murphy’s BAND-IT [Duff y 35; 430-hp Cummins] and Robert Lee III’s JUSTIN & COLBY II [Mitchell Cove 35; 265-hp John Deere]. Even as they neared the fi nish line it was still too close to call, but it was BAND-IT that just slipped by for second in the closest race of the day. Dana Beal’s RIGHT STUFF [Libby 34; 500 hp Cummins] has been the boat to beat in Class G (436 to 550 hp, 28- 35 feet) and again today no one was getting by him for the win. In Class H (436 to 550 hp, 36 feet and over) Dean Beal and MISS NORMA [Wayne Beal 36; 480-hp Cum- mins] came and bested all comers. In Class I (551 to 700 hp, 28-35 feet) we had Patrick Faulkingham’s MARGARET E. [Young Brothers 30; 570-hp FPT] and Chris Smith’s MISTY [Crowley Beal 33; 650 hp Scania] on the line and it was MARGARET E. get- ting the win. The next race, Class J (551 to
