Audit, tax and consulting firm RSM has expanded its tax team in Southampton with two new senior hires. Richard Meller joins as a corporate tax director while Karen Gibbons is appointed VAT associate director. Meller joins with 18 years of tax experience. In his career to date, he has been involved in a variety of tax advisory projects including M&A transactions, due diligence, corporate reorganisations, innovation tax reliefs and share schemes. Gibbons is a leading indirect tax professional with over 15 years’ experience gained in practice with the Big Four and at HMRC. Her appointment strengthens the VAT practice in Southampton, led by VAT partner Phil Munn. They will both advise ambitious owner-managed and private-equity- backed businesses in the region.


The largest commercial property transactional team in the Solent region has been unveiled following the merger between Vail Williams LLP and Hughes Ellard. With the addition of the 27 staff at Hughes Ellard, which was founded 44 years ago, Vail Williams now has 165 employees and partners nationally. Of those, the newly enlarged team of 10 business space, retail and leisure and investment agents for the Solent region provide acquisition and disposal advisory services for occupiers, developers and investors. Russell Mogridge, an equity partner at Vail Williams, and previously an owner/director at Hughes Ellard for 17 years, leads the transactional team from Vail Williams’ Solent offices at Ocean Village in Southampton and the Lakeside North Harbour business campus in Portsmouth.


Petersfield-based international marcomms specialist Azalea has continued its expansion with the recruitment of Michael Birch in the role of account director. Birch, 38, brings extensive experience from both tour operations and in- house brand marketing. He joins from agency Performance 54, where he was head of trade and tourism. Birch brings with him extensive experience in content creation, strategic partnerships, retail, and digital trade and social marketing, in addition to a degree in business management and a professional diploma in marketing.


Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO LLP is continuing its investment and focus on top talent with the promotion of Arbinder Chatwal to audit partner. Chatwal has been a director at BDO’s Southampton office since 2012 where he is part of a 100-strong audit practice. He has been instrumental in driving BDO’s successful campaign to promote and support the Central South Mid Market and in particular advises companies seeking to expand internationally. He is also head of India advisory services for the firm.

Justine Heeley has been appointed as the new managing director at Oceanair Marine. Heeley joins Dometic after a number of executive positions within the marine industry. She was formally CEO of Orolia UK (part of the McMurdo Group), prior to this she was managing director of Drew Marine Signal & Safety and formerly managing director of Chemring Marine. She brings with her a breadth of experience from the leisure and professional Marine industry.


A-One Insurance Group (AOIG) has recruited two new specialists to boost its head office team at Ringwood. David Staddon (left), joins as an account handler from Higos Insurance Services, having worked in insurance for 11 years, with experience across personal and commercial products. His past roles include, customer services, administration, underwriting, account handling plus senior posts. CII qualified, Staddon is working towards his Dip CII and ultimately plans to attain ACII status. Nick Magee (right), has joined as a trainee account executive from Alan & Thomas Insurance Group. He most recently spent a year as a commercial insurance adviser for SMEs. Qualified to diploma level, Magee is working towards ACII.
