Solent

Two companies from the Solent area sat side by side in the latest Profit Track 100 table.

The Dorchester-based housebuilder CG Fry and Son gained 31st placing, with Ahmad Tea at Chandler’s Ford in 32nd position.

CG Fry and Son.was founded by Charlie Fry in 1935 and is now run by his grandson Philip, who is managing director.

As one of the principal builders of Poundbury, Prince Charles’s model town, it continues to use traditional building techniques and local materials. It now has 10 development sites in Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, and completed 164 homes in 2016, lifting profits to £4.3m.

With a staff of some 140, it achieved average profit growth of 81%, with the latest sales figures rising to over £60m.

The firm claims there is still a widely held misconception that Help to Buy is only for first-time buyers, and for those looking to take a step onto or move up the property ladder it held a special Help to Buy event in April, when it explained that properties below a threshold of £600,000 qualify for the scheme.

Ahmad Tea was founded in 1986 by chairman Rahim Afshar and his two brothers with support from their late father Ahmad. Profits rose to £3.8m in 2016 helped by strong demand for healthier teas and growth in America and Eastern Europe.

With a staff of 300, its annual average profit growth was 79%, and it now boasts latest sales of £58m. It has become a household name in the Middle East and Russia, and now sells to customers in 80 countries using historical paintings of London in its marketing to boost global appeal.

“In the UK head office we taste over 500 cups of tea every day to search for the best quality teas available from around the world,” said tea taster Dominic Marriot.
