Margarette Golding Award Brenda Lowe

Stevenage Club is proud to announce that Brenda Lowe has been presented with a Margarette Golding award in recognition of her commitment to supporting the family group and the resolution of conflict among individuals through mediation and the promotion of international peace.

Brenda has often started as a volunteer and fundraiser for a charity she supports and then because of her interest, energy and leadership qualities has risen to a prominent position within that charity and made it more high profile and effective.

After the birth of her children, Brenda started a course with the National Childbirth Trust and followed this by becoming an Antenatal Teacher and Parenting Educator. She later became chairwoman of the local National Childbirth Trust and was involved with the campaign to keep open the local maternity hospital. When she heard about the charity Home-Start (which places a volunteer to assist a young family who may need extra help) she became trustee for the group, major fundraiser, stop-gap volunteer and assisted with training volunteers. Another charity Brenda supports is Hope and Homes for Children, becoming a speaker promoting the charity and fundraising.

flannel and soap and a bag to the places where they are needed. On International Women’s Day, Brenda persuaded 40 local ladies and 20 schoolgirls to congregate together and make the STs and pack donated articles into bags. She received a donation which allowed her to rent the hall for the sew-in, provide lunch and buy materials for them to work on. Brenda has also organised and spoken at a conference to consider the implications of violence towards women and to spread information on the support available to victims of violence.

The Inner Wheel Club of Stevenage first came up with the idea of the Margarette Golding Award and we believe that Brenda Lowe is an excellent recipient.

One of our members came across this plaque in St Mary’s Park in Barnsley. I think most members thought it had disappeared when a car park was built.

Back in 1993/1994 Association President Pam Forsyth asked clubs to plant a tree to commemorate the Association’s 60th anniversary. Barnsley planted a tree and also had this plaque made up. Amazing that it has survived!

I was in Mexborough back then. We planted a tree in a local community garden. After it had been vandalised for the 3rd time the council said not to bother again. They never did send us a bill for the tree! I wonder how many of the trees survive today?

Here’s the challenge. See if you can remember whether your club planted a tree and if so is it still thriving? I would love to know!

Having taken courses and obtained qualifications in mediation and counselling, Brenda has become a Volunteer Mediator in the community in family cases and a trainer in Peer Mediation within schools to resolve conflicts like bullying.

With an interest in Peace and Reconciliation Brenda proposed at the IIW Convention in Istanbul in 2012 that all IW clubs throughout the world should observe the United Nations day of peace on September 21st. That proposal was accepted. Brenda organises fundraising events to raise the public awareness of the day and speaks on Peace and conflict resolution.

Recently Brenda attended the Graduation Day at Bradford University for Rotary Peace scholars. While she was there she saw a charity called Days for Girls. The charity makes STs which are washable and so reusable in much the same way as was done in this country at the beginning of the last century. They then send packs containing the STs, knickers,
