Leader and Founder of Popular Beccles Choir to Retire


BRam Bryant founded the pop- ular Beccles Choir “Friends in Harmony” 22 years ago. He, and a group of friends, responded to the late, Bob Ellwood’s (mayor of Beccles) appeal, to raise money for another “Cad pump” to give pain relief to cancer suf- ferers. “Friends in Harmony” has


raised over £52,000, every penny of which has been donat- ed to charity or other good causes. It is with some sadness that Bram, due to health reasons,


feels that it is time to step down from leading the choir. Bram’s retirement concert will be on Friday 6th July in Beccles Parish Church at 7.30pm. The choir will be joined by the “Norfolk Fellowship Brass Band” of the Salvationarmy and funds raised will go to support the work of the Salvation army in Estonia. Bram would like to thank all the loyal followers of the choir for all their support and encourage- ment over the last 22 years. Bram said, “I must pay tribute, not just to the members of the


choir for their brilliant support throughout these 22 years, but also to my wife Christine, who has faithfully accompanied the choir for all rehearsals and con- certs, on a very large variety of pianos and keyboards. I have really enjoyed my time as leader but now feel it is time to stand back and hand over to a new per- son who can take the choir into a new era, making music for the pleasure of both the choir’s members and those who will support at future concerts.”

2018 SEASON OPENS WITH A SPLASH


WHaT a fantastic facility to have! That is the first impression most people will have when they walk through the gate and see the Lido. and they would be right. This really is an amazing place, and most incredible of all, there are still residents of Beccles that do not know it exists! Or maybe they think it’s the same tired facil- ity that closed in 2008? Located alongside the river Waveney watching the boats go by – you really are a world away from the hustle and bustle of the busy town centre – yet it is little more than a stone’s throw!

swimming pool has a maximum depth of 3.5 metres and is the per- fect place to start the day with a few lengths. Or, why not work on your diving technique from the 1m springboard? To the rear of the large pool you’ll find the toddler pool, which is also heated to the same temperature. Naturally, if it is 30 degrees outside you will want to dip in to cool off. this way. Beccles Lido Limited (a not-for-profit charity) was set up in 2009 to acquire the old, neglected open air swimming pool which closed in 2008. The directors set about fundraising so that they would be able to re-open. The challenge was set and the people of Beccles got behind the new ven- ture and the combined total from donations, fundraising events and grants exceeded £200,000 and enabled Beccles Lido Limited to open the Lido in 2010. The model works and has done for the last eight years and every year much needed maintenance and invest- ment in facilities is carried out. The team are always left speech-


less by the support they receive from the people of Beccles and the surrounding towns and villages. This is clearly a much loved, want- ed and needed facility. The Lido is open from late may to early Sep- tember (may 26th – September 9th) and sees well over 40,000


visitors in those 15 weeks! This year patrons will notice the


brand-new toilet block. Thedirec- tors challenged the public to raise the first £10,000 towards the cost with donations and grants making up the rest of the cost. In fact, the public raised over £32,000! This year the big funding push is for a new liner for the main pool. Shaun Crowley, Chief Executive of Bec- cles Lido Limited, knows this is a big ask, but the liner really needs doing in time for the 2019 summer season. The cost will be in excess of £100,000 and again the board of directors are challenging the pub- lic to kickstart the fund-raising. But, this is not just about getting the money in the kitty. fantastic community venue attract- ing a dedicated group of lane swimmers in the early morning, followed by families making the most of the giant inflatable in the middle of the day before more relaxed swimming and fun contin- ues after lunch. Beccles Lido is here to be used by one and all and let’s face it, if it is good enough for


a mermaid, it must be good enough for the rest of us! The pool is open 7am – 6.30pmmon- day, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday; 7am – 8pm on Thursdays and 7.30am – 6.30pm at weekends.
