NORFOLK & SUFFOLK AVIATION MUSEUM, FLIXTON
HaVINg opened in 1975, the Norfolk & Suffolk aviation museum (NaSam) has been a popular day out and tourist at- traction for many years. Just a couple of miles west of Bungay you’ll find the village of Flix- ton. But, there are not many vil- lages where you will be greeted
by a fleet of aircraft! It is not hard to find NaSam
there is agloster Javelin andde Havilland Sea Vixen parked on the front lawn! Of course, these are just two of the hundreds of exhibits, including over 60 air- craft and cockpits and a whole host related artefacts and memo-
rabilia – over 30,000 items! This really is a fascinating place to visit, whether you have an inter- est in aviation history or not. Best of all, it is completely free to enter – though donations are very welcome. Of course, in East anglia we
have a great history when it comes to World War Two air- fields, Norfolk and Suffolk were peppered with airbases and here at NaSam you will find themed buildings displaying artefacts from the period. There is special attention paid to the 446th Bomber group who were based at Flixton during in World War Two. In fact, 446 were the lon- gest-term resident at Flixton air- field during the war. Naturally, there are plenty of RaF related items here too as well as the Royal Observer Corps. The museum is run largely by

volunteers (there is a single paid member of staff) and the bulk of the maintenance and restoration work on the aircraft and exhibits is carried out by the team of dedicated and passionate volun- teers. Over the course of the year NaSam can expect to see
around 40,000 visitors, many of which will be families and school groups and visits. It goes without saying that NaSam is a big hit with the pupils on the school trips. The team here prepare excit-
ing and fascinating talks taking the children into a replicaander- son Shelter, flight simulators and even using an aircraft as a class- room! Hardly a surprise to learn that schools travel from across the region to make the most of this fantastic place. People are regularly donating
items to the museum and are delighted when the volunteers here can bring it to life and explain what it is and how it
would have been part of that per- son’s life. In a nutshell, that is what happens here. This is about human stories – bringing to life something from yesteryear and putting it into context. This is a fantastic place that has been run- ning for over 40 years, thanks to the hard work and dedication of a small team of volunteers. With the themed NaaFI café on site, plenty of picnic benches outside and lots of easy parking, you really must come and discover NaSam for yourself. Plan your trip today by visiting the website –

OuRmay fundraising sale, after the last two disappointing ones, was fantastic raising a total of £354.57 with particular thanks to Robin’s plants, which did very well. We hope to be at the Buttercross again on June 30th, but as yet have not had it con- firmed. Last month’s sale was a bit
chaotic, as just before it our old Volvo died. We had the loan of a very small black car with no tow bar (to pull the trailer we bring our paste tables for the sale in) and wracked our brains to find a way to bring everything to the Buttercross. However, people who run the Pet Shop opposite the Buttercross very kindly let us bring the tables up just before they closed the evening before our sale and stored them over- night, so we could collect them early next morning and set them up to put our sale goods on then Ron did two trips with the little car loaded up with sale stuff while I set them up. as you can see from our takings, it was worth it! We now have a new car and by the next sale its tow bar will be fitted. We would also like to express our grateful thanks to Russell, who has a large van and kindly brought our paste tables and remaining sales stuff back home again. Last month’s featured cat -
Jady Lady - is settling into her new home, as are several others. This month we are again fea-
turingarthur (he was featured a while back, but has sadly come back to us as his elderly owner has just died). arthur is seven years old, black and white and very friendly. However, he does need a home without other cats or dogs and possibly without children. For cat-related advice or if
you are interested in homing please call Lyn on 01508 482737.

Harleston Ladies Evening Group
ON Wednesday 16th may the Ladies Evening group at Harleston introduced their speaker Tony Brown to give a talk and slides on the Isles of Scilly and its wildlife. He showed wonderful photo-
graphs he had taken of the crea- tures in rock pools, birds and wild flowers.a lot of the shores of the islands are very rocky though there are some beaches combined with a mild climate so plants flower longer.
