Beccles U3A

dR Richard Hoggett gave an extremely informative talk, on ‘The archeology of the Cold War’, at Beccles u3a’s may meeting. He defined archaeology as

‘the study of the past from its material remnants’ and after a more general summary of the Cold War, presented examples relating to Eastanglia. Richard is a freelance heritage

consultant, writer and lecturer with over 20 years’ experience in the academic, commercial and local authority heritage sec- tors who has worked with the university of Suffolk as part of the Saxon Shore project and the St Edmund’sabbey project. He is an elected Fellow of the Soci- ety of antiquaries of London and a member of the Chartered Institute forarchaeologists. He explained how there is an

increasing move towards recog- nising the civil defence rem- nants from the First and Second World Wars as archaeologically important some of which have been lost, or in danger of being lost to coastal erosion.

Previous Bungay duck Races have attracted crowds of over 500, but the Falcon meadow Community Trust which runs the whole show isn’t quite sure how the donkeys will mix with over 2,000 plastic ducks. But they do predict that only the ducks will be racing.

This was the equal warmest

may (with 2017) since 1992, there being some very warm day- time temperatures. Thirteen days of 20C or more noted, three of these 25C plus (all of which occurred during the two Bank Holiday weekends, 25.5C on 7th, 27.0C on 8th and 25.0C on 28th). The 27.0C was the warmestmay day sincemay 23rd 2010, incred- ibly at this early stage of the year, we have now had two mini heat- waves, following that of april 18th to 22nd. On the other end of the scale, the coolest day and night (maximum 12.0C, mini- mum +2.5C) were recorded on the 2nd. This being one of four days which failed to reach 15C maximum, the others during three consecutive days, 16th to 18th inclusive. This was part of the coolest week commencing 13th. The run of five consecutive

rainy months, december 2017 to april 2018 had seen 16.08” of rain recorded. This was halted by only five rain days accumulating just 0.74”, not only notable for being the driestmay since 1998,

only 1990 (3) and 1980 (4) had fewer rain days, while 1989 equalled number achieved this month. Historically, High pressure is

often a feature ofmay’s weather in the east of British Isles and so it proved again this time. How- ever the position of the anticy- clone is vital to determine how much cloud is in its circulation. Two periods of no recordable rain were noted in nine days, 3rd to 11th and eleven days, 13th to 23rd. during the last week, we expe-
