It’s your chance to shout about the joys of village
OYEZ, oyez – Lenham is looking for a newvillage crier. Gez Clark (pictured), who is
standing down from the position after 27 years, will be hosting a com- petition at this year’s Family Fun Day in the village to find his re- placement. He is looking for someone –male,
female, young or old – to take up themantle, which sawhimtake the national title for his verbal skills. Those entering will be given two
cries to try, with the best declared the winner by three judges – one from the parish council and two well-known members of the com- munity. The contest will start outside
Lenham Community Centre in Groom Way at 2pm on Saturday, June 9. Anyone interested in putting
themselves forward should apply in writing, with their name and con- tact details, marking their entry Town Crown Contest and put it through the door of Philip Jarvis es- tate agent in The Square by June 7.
Gez (57)won the right to become
the town crier in an identicalmatch of skills inMay 1991 andsays he has “absolutely loved” promoting vil- lage events. His last cry will be given on the day after the contest at the villagemarket, where he has put
in a regular appearance over the years. He says the role of town crier,
which is unpaid, continues to be highly sought-after. He bought a crier’s uniform in 2002 for £1,100, forwhich he received several dona- tions, including from the parish council, andhas foundhimself com- peting and taking on commercial commissions. He said: “There is always a call for
a good town crier and I have been kept busy in Lenham. It is a com- mitment, and Iwould say that any- one who takes on the job needs to love Lenhamand be keen to sing its praises.” Gez was born in Lenham, and
after a brief spell away, he returned with hiswife Jan in 1990. He says he’ll be reluctant to leave
“a very special village” where his family has lived for generations, but with more houses on the way, the taxi driver says he is looking for “somewhere that’s going to be a lit- tle quieter”. He hopes to move to Lancashire, to be nearer family.
