Market blow
MAIDSTONE BoroughCouncil has highlighted that additional licences are required for traders to sell at Market on the Green, a long and costly process. In order forBearstedParishCoun-

legal. All proceedswill be donated to Kent Wildlife Trust, which has a stall regularly at the market. BearstedParishCouncilwill work
withMBC and a new market man- ager in a bid to keep the event free for residents.

BEARSTEDhas teamed upwith a rehabilitation service to give of- fenders the opportunity to carry out useful work in the parish as part of their sentences. The parish council has entered
into a partnership with Kent, Sur- rey & Sussex Community Rehabil- itation Company (KSS CRC) on a number of environmental im- provement projects. TheKSSCRC’sCommunity Pay-
back (CP) team began the work in earlyMay. A community order can be im-
posed for offences that are serious, but not so serious as to warrant a custodial sentence. It means the punishment can be carried out in the community, instead of in prison. Acommunity order ismade up of one or more requirements that the
A recently-tidied grass bank
court can order an offender to do. In Bearsted, the projects include
clearingweeds behind Smarts Cot- tages andMallingsDrive aswell as clearing rocks and blocks at the top of Bell Lane. These are just the first of many
areas thatwill benefit fromgeneral tidying. Councillor Geoff Bennett, who
has been instrumental in getting this partnership up and running,
said: “KSS CRC’s service users are making restoration to the commu- nity under the Community Pay- back scheme. “Additional CP workers are
available at weekends and there is no charge to Bearsted ParishCoun- cil. The workers will return every week until all works are com- pleted.” A council spokesman added: “It
is a very worthwhile scheme to be involved in as it allows users to give something back to society and the parish benefits at no extra cost to the taxpayer.” Do you knowof a project that could benefit from Community Payback? Contact deputy@bearst-
