General Secretary’s Report and President’s Column GENERAL SECRETARY’S REPORT Dear Members

Having closed last year’s books and sent them to the accountants I am now preparing invoices for 2018 membership subs, so if you have

not received yours

by the time you read this please contact me.

Following our meetings we are looking at ways on increasing our membership so we are carrying out a survey of members/ non-members and ex-members to see what people think of the institute and how we can offer more.

If you happen to be one of our members who get an email from me please complete the survey so we can get your views. If you have not had a survey and would like to complete one just drop me an email with your email address as I am sure we all have some good ideas on how the Institute can improve and grow.

Keith Andrews is driving this project but we didn’t want to hand over email addresses to another company to use because of data protection so I have sent out the survey, Survey Monkey will collate all the statistics for us to move forward.

The Executive Council is of the opinion that we need to be PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Dear Members and Colleagues

A warm welcome, from within my dugout igloo, to the second edition of the 2018 journal. It surely has been an eventful time with multiple attacks from the “Beast from the East” (of course we rather keep to the weather). It starts to set the tone for our conference; “The Witches Cauldron”,

for which we now have definite booked times. Rather than on Halloweens day, the day I would have liked it to be, the date is confirmed to be the 14th of November 2018, with the training day following on the 15th.

The 2018 conference will target the waste to energy

sector where we are seeing innovative designs of different processes, and with it the challenges of refractory material selection. Conditions within these units are so aggressive that it now requires wizards to find the best solutions. There has been a time when refractories were seen as a black art, and over years this has, to some extent, been tamed as the secrets of many refractory systems have been unravelled.

in better contact with the refractory producers in India and China, we all know that the Refractory Industry in the UK is smaller now than it was 20 years ago. But almost 50% of our membership is still UK based.

The Executive Council are looking at ways of increasing our profile to try to get new members to join us from other areas of the world, we know that this is going to cost a considerable amount of money so we want to make sure that we are spending the money wisely and doing the survey is part of this work before we get into any real costs.

Remember it is your Institute not just councils, all members are equal and your views are equally important, with the UK branch structure now failing I sometimes think the exec and council are getting more remote to the ordinary members, so it is important that if anyone needs to make comment or offer help then you should be able to do so. You can always contact me by email or phone (evenings are best for me).

We are sending copies of this journal to Ceramitec so if you are going to this exhibition please let me know if the journal is being displayed in a prominent area.

I look forward to hearing from you. Jayne Woodhead
