Year 7 County Cup & PEDSSA Cup Winners
Jacob Peters Commonwealth Games 2018
Jacob travelled out to Australia with Team England at the end of March where he shared a room with Ben Proud, a GB Olympic swimmer, current World Champion at 50 metre butterfly and 2014 Commonwealth Games butterfly champion. At the Games, so good were Jacob’s swims that he ended up taking part in nine races across six days, reaching the finals of all three men's butterfly events. He was the youngest competitor in all three butterfly events and the only teenager in two of them.
After reaching the County and PEDSSA finals before the Easter break the Year 7 team had to wait until the Summer term to finish their season. In a really close and exciting game, an extra time 1-0 win against St Michaels secured the County Cup. The season then finished in style with a 3-2 win against Emmanuel School in the PEDSSA final when the team showed great character to twice come from behind before scoring the winning goal.
The team have worked tirelessly and deserve great credit for the way they applied themselves throughout a very successful and enjoyable season. I would like to thank Mr. McDonald and all the players for their hard work to achieve this success. Mr. Crutchley
Jacob’s first event was the 50 metre butterfly, where despite huge nerves he broke his own Dorset junior record in the heats, qualifying sixth fastest overall. This was surpassed in the semi-finals, where he finished in 24.05 seconds, in the process beating Ben Proud’s 2012 British 17 year old age group record. This swim resulted in him qualifying for the final in front of a noisy crowd of 10,000 people. Even though he was the youngest competitor, Jacob excelled, lowering his time in the process to 24 seconds dead and finishing 7th overall. After another impressive swim in his heat, Jacob made the 200 metre butterfly final. In this final, he made a significant improvement on his qualification time to finish in a brilliant fifth place in a time of 1 minute and 57 seconds. In the 100 metre butterfly, Jacob was placed sixth overall fastest in the heats. He then improved his time in the semi-final, qualifying for the overall final. Here is the final of the mens 100m butterfly at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Jacob finished a very creditable joint fifth in an impressive time of 53.1 seconds. This final, coupled with one of the fastest reaction times off the starting blocks at the Games, and previous performances earned Jacob the butterfly leg in the heats of the 4 x 100m medley relay. Here he helped Team England qualify in second place for the final behind Australia. In what turned out to be a very close and exciting final, the English team were overhauled in the final 5 metres by the Australian quartet, coming within 0.09 seconds of first place but winning a silver medal in the process.
