Sixth Form Ski Trip

Green Week Report

Activities - Thank you to everyone who supported our Green Week activities earlier in May. We had talks on the Etches Collection, displays and meetings from the newly formed Wildlife and Eco Clubs, displays from Dorset Wildlife Trust on the marine environment, seed planting involving St Mary’s, Hillbourne and Longfleet pupils, displays and quizzes in the library, Green Car club, and a terrific

bee demonstration.

The Sixth Form Ski Trip took place in the first week of the Easter break. We were in Sauze D’Olux, the same resort and hotel as we were for the Year 9 trip six weeks earlier, and it was very much a case of familiarity being a good thing. Knowing where to get our equipment, where to meet the instructors, where to have lunch etc took away some of the anxieties of going to a new resort. Most of the boys had skied before – many with the school in Year 9 – so I was expecting them all to be well organised. Given that two lads lost their goggles before we had even started skiing on the first day put me straight on that one! Still, they soon got into the groove, and the small number of beginners made rapid progress.

The conditions were absolutely brilliant. The snow was even deeper than at half term, and the first two days were sunny but cold – leading to very rapid skiing. Then two days of snow, with some very poor visibility – a very different challenge. Finally, the last two days were sunny again, and with the top up of snow the skiing was again terrific. I have to report that we all made the most of it, and it was great fun skiing with the lads at the end of the day once the lessons had finished. Our ‘supervised recreational skiing’ gave them the chance to ski with their friends, regardless of ability, and seemed to be enjoyed by all who took part.

We made the most of the attractions of Sauze, which is a very nice little place – full of English people, which can be a mixed blessing! The boys enjoyed walking into town after skiing, and seemed to like the evening events we had set up. As ever, they were excellent company, and we even managed to get in a few conversations about politics (a number of my Year 12 group were on the trip). For those in Year 13, I hope this will stand as a final very positive school trip. My thanks to my colleagues – Miss Stevens/Bladen, and Mr Hay/Stickney/Elias.

Recycling - It was fortuitous that we followed the Earth Week which highlighted the environmental issues facing us all. Single use plastic bottles has been raised by the students and staff as an issue for us all to address.

We are encouraging refilling

water bottles.

reusable If

we must use single use plastic bottles, then we are now measuring our waste and further promoting recycling with the new prominent bins in the Main Hall and Street. We did a plastic bottle count on 1 May and retrieved over 240. If we continued with this pattern of binning these bottles, then this amounts to 48,000 plastic bottles a year just at Poole Grammar.

To help reduce single use plastic bottles, we have just won an award from Wessex Water to purchase some reusable water bottles. More news on this later, and thank you for all your support reducing plastics in our environment. FFL/Green Committee, Eco Club, Wildlife Club. Bee Club

PGS Mountain Bike Team

'Very well done to Ben Vinvent, Ben Baker, Nathan Hansler, Toby Johnson and Gus Clarke for representing the school in the Dorset wide inter-school Mtb Races. Having developed specific riding skills throughout the year our riders were able to test their skills at Moors Valley against all manner of rivals. Each rider gave it their all in time trial events, relay and group racing. Final scores are yet to come in

but the team did themselves and the school proud! Keep on pedalling!'
