• Are their credentials up to date? Ask for all of their SAP credentials.
• How many RTD cases does the SAP conduct each year?
• How long has the SAP been conducting RTD case management?
• What kind of referral network does the SAP have for education, counseling, or treatment referrals?
• How many cases does the SAP see in your specific DOT administration annually?
• Is the SAP willing to learn about your role, your industry, and your unique obstacles with the RTD process?
• Finally, and most importantly, is the SAP commited to public safety? You may be a zero-tolerance employer,
so you think you don’t have to bother with all this RTD process. But even if you
are zero-tolerance, you MUST refer the employee to a SAP for the RTD process. You want to know that you referred the employee to a competent SAP that understands the process well. As an addiction specialist for 41 years,
I believe in second chances. I have seen employees complete the RTD process, and go on to become excellent employees that can be counted on to create a culture of safety at the job-site. However, I also know that in the DOT
RTD process, safety trumps everything. Public safety is the PURPOSE of the RTD process. If we understand each other’s roles just a litle bit beter, we can develop best practices that will lead to the best outcomes for all—and most importantly, for the public we serve. ❚
