Got 5 mins? Get Fit... WHAT? The U.S. is a leader in many amazing areas, but in one
area in particular leadership is nothing to crow about. More than 43.3 percent of Americans fail to meet even
modest goals for physical activity- we're Number One in the world in sloth (OK, we'll call it inactivity...) Since we know that physical activity is important in
preventing and treating all kinds of diseases, AND healthfully extends your life (years) compared to a sedentary individual, you would think you could make daily exercise happen, right? Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy. With today’s schedules, many folks feel that they have no
time for themselves and when they do, exercise isn’t usually the first thing they think of doing. How about if I could con- vince you that moving for as little as five minutes a day counts? Can you spare 5 MINUTES a day for improved fitness? Research proves that during any aerobic exercise, even
walking for five minutes, your heart immediately begins to beat faster in order to pump more blood to your muscles. In fact, scientists have found that people’s hearts beat
faster even before they exercise- just by the brain anticipating it! Speeding up your heart rate is great because it encourages your arteries to widen naturally, vastly increasing blood flow and circulation. In just five minutes of moderate exercise, your lungs
begin to supply your body with more oxygen, carrying higher levels of carbon dioxide out of your body. More oxygen means you are more alert and aware. Got 10 minutes? Great! Just 10 minutes of moderate exer-
cise cranks up your metabolism for an hour or longer. Got 20 minutes? Yay! You get to extend that positive
physiological high for the next 12 hours. In as little as oneminute a day you can improve your core,
just by doing a plank. Work up to it, it's not as easy as it sounds. Got a few minutes for stretching? Great, you can easily
decrease stress and strain on your neck and back with some pleasant yoga stretches, like a cat and horse stretch or simply sit in a chair and stretching your torso to peek behind you. 5minute fitness is a thing you can do-You can reverse the
trend of inactivity- why not start today? Linda Gottlieb, MA, CPT, CET is
