different cars from their flagship AMG range. These include two high perform- ance tracks, simulated ice and skid pan courses and a 4x4 course. Entrance to the site, which has activities for all ages, is free and you can see over 100 cars on display including the beautiful 300SL gullwing Mercedes.

Travelling south from Brooklands takes you to the historic country house of the Duke of Richmond which every year opens its gates to more historic motor- sport. The Goodwood Festival of Speed in July is now a must for anyone who loves race cars and motorcycles from all eras. Established in 1993, the Festival of Speed will host more than 100,000 people over three days who come to soak up the sights and sounds of hundreds of different cars and motorbikes racing around the hill climb and forest stage of the track. Guests can immerse themselves in famous cars and bikes at this blue-ribbon event of the motoring calendar. Later in the year, in September, is the event that is a must on the summer Season to-do list – the Goodwood Revival. The whole Revival weekend recreates the style of a bygone era and a major part of the fun and glam- our of the event is that people are en-

couraged to don vintage dress, whether it is to dress up in styles from the Edwardian era, as a pre-war racing driver, a 1920s flapper or as a mechanic from the 1960s. Plenty of people without an interest in cars attend the Revival for the fun or just for a shopping trip to the pop-up markets. Car enthusiasts can get down into the pits and really experience what it’s like to be part of a race team and know they are likely to bump into just about anyone who is anyone in motorsport enjoying the festi- val. Goodwood also offers a number of different driving track days throughout the year. If you prefer to view stunning cars that are not moving at all, then get to one of the many car shows around the coun- try starting at the London Motor Show at Excel Docklands between 17th and 20th May. Here you will find the newest cars coming to the market. If it’s old that you prefer then the three day Silverstone Classic starting 20th July could be what you are looking for. Set on the famous Grand Prix circuit, it has a lot on offer over the weekend including: an auction (where you may go home with more than you expected), air displays, live music and an old-fashioned funfair. Silverstone has more driving experiences than just about any place in the country so make sure to check out their site.

All these events bring out the stars and one person who has taken it to another level is BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans. His passion for all things on wheels led him to

create his own piece of motoring nos- talgia with CarFest North and South, combining a music festival and car show in one place. The northern show takes place in North Cheshire be- tween 27th and 29th July, with the southern show one month later in South Hampshire. Here you can camp for the weekend and soak up fun for all ages. But if it’s the best of the best that you’re looking for, check out a number of outstanding car shows. The first is the London Concourse set in- side the heart of the City of London at the Honourable Artillery Company on the 7th until the 8th June. Here the cars really shine as they are some of the most sought after cars in the world. If something does catch your eye don’t hesitate to ask for the price and if it is for sale.

These events seem to have grown in number over the last few years and two that attract a high number of visi- tors are the Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace, the country estate of the Duke of Marlborough in Oxfordshire and the St James Concours d’Elegance in the even more regal setting of Hampton Court Palace. At the St James Concours, cars that may only see the light of day once a year are paraded around the unique setting of Henry VIII’s palace by the banks of the River Thames – a must see for every- one.

Gary Griffiths loves all things on wheels, especially classic cars. FOCUS The Magazine 13
