PLASTIC FREE NORTH DEVON - What is it?

Plastic Free North Devon is a local movement that has developed in response to the growing problem of plastic pollution in our environment.


We aim to raise awareness of the impact and extent of plastic pollution in our area; reduce the amount of plastic used by individuals and organisations in our community; remove plastic from our environment; and ensure that it is recycled and disposed of properly.


It's about all of us making lots of small changes in how we view, use and dispose of plastic - to make a massive difference for the future.


What's happening? The team have been working hard and have met the Surfers Against Sewage 'Plastic Free Coastlines' criteria in Braunton, Georgeham and Croyde and have got support from youth organisations, local councils and a number of local businesses who have agreed to stop using single use plastic (plastic straws, disposable cups, plastic cutlery etc). A new team has set up to work to achieve plastic free status in Woolacombe and there have been loads of beach cleans on our beautiful North Devon beaches.


270 people turned up to help clear rubbish from Saunton beach and Burrows in January, and throughout February and March there have been well attended beach cleans at Ilfracombe, Croyde, Westward Ho!, Crow Point and along the Tarka Trail. We now are in the process of applying for funding support, setting up a web page, organising more beach cleans and continuing to expand the Plastic Free Coastlines initiative. In addition, we will be looking to work with event organisers to reduce the amount of waste plastic produced at the great events we host our area.

And remember: Take a reusable water bottle and coffee cup with you and don't let anyone give you a plastic straw in a drink!
