High honours for Toby’s youth project

A Romani man, originally from Poland, has been named in the New Year’s Honours list with an MBE for his work with Street Factory - a community interest company that transforms the lives of the young people through hip hop. Toby Gorniak came to Plymouth as a teenager unable to speak English and reached out to other youths through hip hop. The father-of-six and his

wife, Jo, have been successfully running the well- respected Community Interest Company Street Factory for the past 10 years. They initially started on a small scale - however the word soon got around and within a short period of time the “hip hop, rapping, graffiti and dance” project saw over a 100 young people coming through the door every Saturday. Toby’s Romany Gypsy heritage led to Street Factory working in rural Cornwall with Gypsy and traveller young people. Toby said: “We also work

with schools to engage with young people who normally don’t do that well in education.” In February Toby, Jo and

their team successfully achieved their crowdfund target to transform their former industrial space into a gleaming educational centre based around the five elements of hip-hop: DJing, rapping, beatboxing, breakdancing and graffiti art – alongside more conventional lessons and respect, peace, love and unity.

number of business owners who had problems with cleaners cutting corners, missing important areas, or not turning up on time. James said: “We understand that a

pleasant environment keeps staff happy and is essential to productivity. If a place is open to the public, it’s even more important, especially in the hospitality industry that hotels, bars and restaurants live by their reputation. “Clean premises are essential for

Elixel brews up tea-making app

Plymouth-based digital agency Elixel has been delving into the politics of the office tea round with a look back at the six months since the launch of its debut in-house app, Tea Minus. Formerly known as Cuppa, the free app is the first

app of its kind to help take the hard work out of making colleagues a round of drinks. Elixel’s team have analysed the app’s usage and found some interesting insights:

• Tea is the most popular beverage, catering for 60% of the drinks made using the app

• In 48% of the rounds someone volunteered to make the drinks

• The largest round ordered through Tea Minus was a whopping 19 drinks.

The app is unique in allowing multiple users to place

their order on a single, collaborative list from multiple smartphones. Each user can start a round in the app and set their preferences for the perfect brew. Tea Minus also randomly selects who will make the drinks. Tea Minus has been getting rave reviews from the

businesses who have been trialling the trailblazing app. Gavin Jones, Elixel Managing Director commented:

“It’s good to know we have some nice people as users. However, we are also aware that the task of making drinks for colleagues is a sticking point in many offices. Tea Minus is a creative solution that offers a simple way to take the stress out of the office drink round.”

The app can be downloaded free from teaminusapp.com
